So Leo, my daughters new redfoot (rescued from reptile store mid august this yr) is digging up grass roots and eating the roots and dirt that comes up with it...so I'm thinking he's lacking calcium or something in his diet. I don't have calcium to sprinkle on his food so I need to go get that. But...i just read I can give him sardines? Is this true? I read he should get a protein meal once or so a week so should I give him sardines that have the bones in them? the ones canned in water of course. Currently, he doesn't like fresh squash or pumpkin (I have ample supply of this and he won't eat it) no tomato, not fond of big leafyweeds/plants in my yard...but he does like a bag of mixed salad greens that seem less nutritious to me because it has iceberg lettuce mixed in. I've tried all kind of green leaves: mulberry, dandelion leaves Etc. He likes roots and dirt. So sardines? Just once a week?

Cuddle bones work great. Can get them at pet smart for like 2 bucks for a 3 pack. Get the ones for birds shaped like a wing. It's 100% calcium carbonate. They will dose themselves with it too.

Sardines? As in canned sardines? Hmmmm...I'm not an RF owner, but I don't think that's a good idea. Sardines are usually packed in oil and processed with too much salt. Kale is a good source of calcium. Try getting him a sepia/cuttle bone. Wal-Mart sells them for birds and reptiles.

I feed my reds fish sometimes so sardines why not . But let me tell you if his enclosure is inside feeding him animal protein is a bad idea . He will stink up your whole house . But I keep my reds outside so its no big smelly problem . I know Kelly gives his liver . I have never tried sardines but I will now .
