male red foots have a long fat tail females have small tails males have a
concave plastoron males also have an indent in the bottom of their shells Redfoot tortoises start breeding when they are 6-8" long. At the smaller size clutches are small and eggs are often infertile. Larger tortoises seem to be more successful in producing fertile eggs. if you want more info go to www.redfoottortoise.com
For me this is tricky to explain, but here is a go. First off your going to want to look at the whole picture, not just one or even two things because there will be variations between not only the the varieties, but even the individuals.
It starts normally becoming apparent around 7" in length.
Some things to look for are:
Size with males usually being larger.
Shell concavity you see this difference more with the Northerns. The females may have concavity, but usually not as deep as the males.
They are still a bit small, but I would guess both are female.
TAIL-
MALE: Long, muscular tails; carried wrapped along side; blunt tips; vent in the middle of the tail; flat or slightly 'grooved' from vent to tip.
FEMALE: Short, wide tail; pointy tip; vent near base.
CARAPACE- There are differences in shape from the top and sides, but they vary by region (or by what may prove to be sub-species.)
PLASTRON-
MALE: Fairly large 'gap' between rear of plastron and carapace; anal scutes make a wide angle; older tortoises develop strongly indented/concave plastron.
FEMALE: Plastron and carapace almost touch in the back; anal scutes form about a 90 degree angle; plastron stays flat or slightly rounded.
