Will the vet be able to fix it. If so how much do you think it will cost.

Shell rot from a bite of some-sort and an abscessed ear. If you are new to chelonia he should go see a Vet as that abscess with need to be lanced and cleaned out. You might be able to find an experienced re-habber to help you since we all know Vets are expensive.

Locate a reptile vet in your area...you can expect to spend about $100 or more unfortunately....most vets will want to do an initial checkup and then the actual procedure and then meds....it seems like a lot to shell out at one time..but in this life I have noticed 'you're only as broke as your next paycheck'....no more Starbucks coffee or takeout for a while!!....

If the rescue frequently has box turtles, then I would bet they will do it. Can't hurt to ask. It isn't difficult to do if you've done it before. The shell rot looks old, but I would put bacitracin on it just in case.

Get Shirley looked at As soon as possible by a reptile vet or even a reptile rehab.

I had a male Ornate BT with an abscessed ear in 1993. He was a very nice polite boy. I took him to a regular vet, who said he knew how to treat reptiles. Long story short my poor male passed away. Almost a year later I ran into one of the Vet tech's, she told me he was treating my turtle using a book. I still don't exactly know how he treated the abscess.

This same Vet Tech worked for a Wild Animal rescue, I had a pet oppossum, they had a reptile expert. He gave me ideas on how to modify a 55 gallon tank into a 2 level tank with a small pool. My female Cleo lived in it until 2005 when it got broken in a move to our new house. This forum has taught me how to safely keep Box turtles outside and inside totes for winters and Brumation/hibernation.
