Gpp_siblings.jpg

Here are mine. These two hatched out Summer of 2011 and are siblings. The larger individual is more shy and is often around my other animals. The smaller individual is more of bully (will even nip at a hand) and has been kept in isolation and is very dense for its relatively small size. They had been housed in equivalent furnishings until recently, save for species exposure (the smaller had nothing more than earthworms and isopods in its enclosure, while the larger one has been interacting with a sulcata and two Aldabra tortoises). Food supply is always ad libitum. When warm weather hit, I let the larger one roam outside. The smaller one has, after some decision, been moved to an outdoor enclosed space that I use for some babies and juveniles that are not quite ready for the main yard. I want to see if this move positively impacts growth or not. It is interesting to see the individual differences.

Wow! Thats a big size differance for siblings... now I know I should have no expectations of size -vs- age!

Split scutes occur in tortoises incubated at any temperature, the percentage is higher when the eggs are incubated at higher temperatures. Which also produces predominantly female tortoises. So, maybe, more often then not, split scute tortoises are female.

My general observations across most species match this. Increased incidence of split scutes correlates to increased probability of female sex.

There are quite a few male marginated tortoises running around with split scutes, too, unfortunately. Other types, too, but that species just seems more difficult to generate females for.

I have found split scute and zig-zag scute patterns on multiple tortoises of multiple species in nature and in both sexes, but the numbers are too low in these instances for me to make any meaningful conclusions.

OK, I see.... I was thinking it was like a 90/10 ratio but it's more like a 66/33 ratio more realistically.

Thanks!! She never goes in the hide she mainly lays on top of it. She is a character, completely different from my sully. So much more outgoing: -)

Their personality differences are amazing! When I brought home my first I never expected so much personality from a tortoise!
