Hi all,

I recently set up my tortoise enclosure to prepare for my hatchling coming in the next few weeks. I wanted to practice keeping the humidity and temperature for what the baby tort needs. I noticed that my moss hide started to sprout and I was curious if anyone knew what the sprouts were? I posted pictures here! I did plant clover and some other weeds in the enclosure that have started sprouting but these sprouts began before I planted any other seeds. Very curious as to what they are and if they’ll be harmful to my baby tort.

Thanks!

Moss is actually very dangerous ,especially to hatchlings. If they eat any, or any of the sprouty bits (which may be moss too ) they don't digest it, and it can cause impaction in their gut. They may not eat it intentionally, but bits get stuck to their food. So get rid of all moss straight away !

I agree with zolasmum.

Western Hermann’s I got the hide for humidity help. I also have read on other forums here that sphagnum moss is okay for tortoises so I’m not sure!

If I was getting a tortoise and I heard both that moss was ok and that it was not ok, guess who I would believe just to be safe?

Some people have not yet learned the hard way and just don't know better. You will learn one way or the other. You can leave moss in there and learn the hard way, or you can learn from the mistakes of those who came before you, and not have to learn from those same mistakes.
