Spray bottles moisten the air and the top layer of the substrate. There are times when the air is dry and spraying is good. Mostly you can save time & effort by just dumping water in and stirring it. The bottom layers need to be damp, and it can take quite a bit of water.

I use a watering can.

Ive obviously misunderstood, I thought tortoises could get shell rot if they were on wet soil. I will dampen it down as soon as I return from the school run
