The tortoise is too cold and does not react to treats, that`s the problem.

The owner has fear that the tortoise could drown because the tort doesen`t react to anything because he is too cold.

I wish I had help to offer, but I want to say what a kindhearted, generous, and loving effort you have made here!
Whatever the outcome for the sulcata, you are to be commended, along with everyone else who has been supporting this woman and her tort, and offering suggestions to free him.
This is a perfect example of what can potentially be accomplished through a network of people like this forum, who, despite their occasional differences, come together for the good of another, totally different kind of creature.
Well done, Sabine!!

Any new news Kamisaki2008? (BTW, I am really new to adult sulcata caretaking so very little experience or good advice...mostly questions.) I believe I've re-read every comment to make sure I'm not asking something again.

Despite the weather, it seems you have kept the burrow relatively warm for him, which ultimately may be the only reasonable recourse you have. I saw a post where @Tom built an underground house. In your case, they made it themselves and perhaps you just need to maintain heat and humidity. Maybe something to insulate the burrow opening that he can push out of the way when it's time.

Are his legs still pliable and/or is there any reaction when you try to grab his leg or foot? I usually get a hiss.
I know you don't want to use water. Did you try the electric blanket near him to see if he would move to it? I like the idea of dragging him out on a blanket if he cooperates.

Then I have hare-brained ideas.

If you really have/want to create space above his shell but have restricted movement, a drill with a long wood auger goes through dirt and clay pretty easily. It should loosen it up enough to shovel some out. Not sure what that will do for you but I presume it's to employ the bicycle hooks and chain. You mention he's around a bend so maybe you can break down some of that wall too.

Next crazy one. Clamp Locking Pliers on a front scute and a gular. Personally, I'd never be able to squeeze one tight enough because of arthritis, but there is a model with hinged clamps to conform to subject's irregular surface and, more importantly, has a hole in the tightening nut so can use a screwdriver to tighten, i.e. can be done with one arthritic hand. Attach chains to these and pull him out. If the ground is bumpy then maybe put some thin plywood on floor. I can't find anything about how strong the gulars are or whether it would cause pain/stress to him but if no other options, WTH.

You have a Lowes in town that has these in stock. https://www.lowes.com/pd/Stanley-FATMAX-12-in-Chain-Clamp-Locking-Pliers/1000034259
I would send you a couple but can't find on Amazon Prime.

After reading my own diatribe, I think I'd just make his new home nice and cozy for the time being.

Please let us know how it's going. Thanks

Thank you very much but it was just only some posts on facebook. Nothing special to me, but I really appreciate your praise. Thank you again.:)

As I keep reading, I hope that her silence doesn't mean that she's completely overwhelmed and giving up. I wish that one of us in her area of Utah could get her some assistance and rally her sully. Please let us know how you are progressing. . . you've come to far to give up now.

Honestly I think it is extremely unconscionable to even suggest running water down there during freezing weather and taking ANY chance of drowning this tortoise or at the very least making the burrow wet and creating a pneumonia causing environment. I really hope the shovels show up soon:<3:.

Could someone shimmy down and wrap something thing like a fitted bed sheet around the tort tide to a rope on each side so you can maybe try and work the tort around the corner and out of the hole?

Really? How many times have you extracted a sulcata from a burrow using the water technique? What were the results? How many times have you extracted a sulcata from a 10' burrow using shovels? How did that go for you?

To be honest, I feel this has gone on too far now to use the water method. This tortoise may be holding onto life by a thread and may not have the energy to get himself up out of the water. I think a pick and shovel is the way to go now.

No answers from Facebook. I check the side twice a day but obviously there is no one in that region that can help.
No answer from @Kamisaki2008 in this thread.
That`s sad.

With out direct communication to her or anyone in the area it is tough to help anyone. Doesn't have to be a tort person(s) to lend a hand, but the act of asking or reaching out has to come from within. Vernal Utah is a very long shot from most places. 25 hrs from m end and no direct shot from west coast. Hope no news is good news.

Hello everyone, first of all I want to thank all of you for your concern and for all of your ideas. I apologize for the delay in updating, I have been working almost day and night at the hospital, and haven't had time to get back on the Forum. I did finally get Tucker out, with a lot of help , and an electric shovel. but he never recovered. His legs and head were still movable, so I hoped for recovery. However after warm baths, heat, and a lot of time, there was no sign of life. I hope somebody else is able to protect their tortoise better than I was able to because of this thread. This is an amazing community, and I truly appreciate all of your concern and help. We still have our little Toby, even though he's not so little. We have decided to put Tucker back in the burrow, where he was always happiest, and fill it back up in the spring. Right now I have him in the heated tortoise house, still hoping for any sign of life. There isn't any smell yet, so we aren't ready to bury him yet. There's always that little glimmer of hope I guess. Thank you again, you are all wonderful.

As a side note, I had our veterinarian, who has some expertise in exotic pets, come by and check him. He also could not find any sign of life. :'( I can't tell you how sad we are.
