Hi,

I have a Russian and he is on sterilised top soil. Should I be keeping it moist?

Also, is it possible to give him too much calcium? He has calcium powder every other day and a cuttlefish.

Thanks

Welcome Angie.
since you asked, top soil contains a lot of sand and sand is bad for two reasons, first it is bad at holding in humidity and secondly, it can get eaten by a little tortoise and cause impaction issues.
i would use something else. orchid bark, coco coir, compost material, etc.
Yes. You can give too much calcium. Just use a tiny pinch.
The cuddle bone will get nibbled on or it wont but keep it nearby in case he wants some.

Agree with the above. Your substrate should be moist and it is best to use something that will hold humidity.
Too much calcium can cause stones. The general rule is a tiny pinch 2X per week.

Some more sand free top soils without herbicides or other chemicals are okay.
As long as they can hold humidity it's fine, in my opinion.
But make sure your humidity is kept up, this is essential, but make sure your temps are up too.
warm and moist, not cold and damp.
most calcium should come from a healthy, mixed diet, but a little sprinkle or an occasional supplement especially with a young growing tortoise is good.
