I have a young Russian tortoise for about 4 months now. I am just wondering are his eyes meant to look like this or is he sick or dehydrated? I give him daily soaks for a 20 mins, he has a water bowl and I spray down his food. I give him calcium, vitamin d and a multivitamin supplements. He has a warm basking area around 35 degrees and an arcadia uvb tube light. He has an automatic misting system in the hot side of his enclosure and I keep the coco coir nice and moist. He is very active and always hungry for more food and digs a lot.

Can’t see anything concerning in the photos personally, but some off the bad advice, for his small age is he in a closed chamber? misters/humidifiers aren’t ideal.
Hopefully you find this helpful to go over, this thread covers correct equipment(uvb, heating bulbs, lighting etc, sounds like you have but double check your backing bulb), correct levels, importance of a closed chamber for younger tortoises(only way to maintain the humidity you need), appropriately maintaining the humidity, safe substrates, there’s lots of visual examples for everything, and a really handy diet link to check out! If going with a greenhouse, the lower the ceiling height, whilst still allowing for recommended bulb height, the better! But I’ll add some more ideas below for closed chambers(if he’s in one already, ditch the mister and start with the lukewarm water pour method covered in the thread😊)aim to keep humidity higher to help new growth come in smoother

This includes different closed chamber options, some work better than others

Lastly, this one here is good to go over and keep on hand, it’ll always help you avoid the wrong bulbs, substrates, housing etc, it explains a bit about the humidifiers and I always encourage double checking purchases on the forum too before buying😊

Hope they come in handy! Welcome to the forum! Adorable little baby you have!🐢💚

Welcome to the forum!

Does he rub his eyes? Are the eyes watery?
No never seen him rubbing his eyes and they’re not watery. The reason I posted this is because I’ve seen photos of other peoples tortoises and their look bigger and fully black. I don’t know if that’s just because of the angle or the lighting tho. I just wanted to make sure my tortoises eyes look okay

Nope it’s not a closed chamber, I didn’t realise at the time I built it that it needed to be. I’m going to get a green house cover for it now tho, thanks

What do you mean by fully black? Are your tortoises eyes clear?
As in the eye is fully blacked out. With my tortoise you can see the black part of the eye, I’m assuming that’s the pupil and it’s surrounded by a grey ring which is probably the Iris?
