Wow! I've read that sulcatas are diggers, but holy cow that's one crazy burrow!! And it's kind of funny how he only comes up just far enough to get his food, like he knows you wanna peep out his space! Good to know the info Tom shared about how strong they are in their burrows...note to self for the future!

That was my thought. lol I have a pair who have been working on their tunnel and I am too scared to try to see how deep it really goes. (I sorta bet my son may try if he ever shows up or my husband). Any way, I noticed a behavior change once mine made this tunnel. The main digger (perhaps the only one) is hardly ever out of his tunnel. He also "stands guard" at the entrance and as you approach he quickly escapes down it. He use to be friendly and come running, when humans appeared.

That sucks that yours runs into the tunnel when you come around. Tank was not well socialized until I adopted him, he had almost no human interaction. So he is shy around anyone else, but when he hears my voice, he comes right up! I'm glad because it gives me a chance to check on him and make sure he gets some food in him.

LOL...not to worry, they will get through that phase....it is almost like they are quick to escape to the burrow, well, because some part of them is triggered by the entire burrow excavation process...it seems to trigger different drives in them as well.

I have one of the CDTs here that I named Ghamara....he is the most recently wild one (before some ahole stole him from the desert)...he is super fast, he is super sensitive to light/motion--he is fricken hilarious....so if he does not see or feel me coming (like when he is on a really great sun nod) and then he suddenly realizes he is not alone, he will tuck all in except one rear foot, he will begin to spin himself crazy fast into an actual dust cloud and then drop that foot and catapult himself directly down his burrow and you can hear him dink around all of the way down, like a pin ball through the launch shoot.....I always feel so bad but at the same time am always thrilled at this behavior....so not to worry, they are like a kid with a new toy in the beginning...so don't take it personal....hell, I have one that has suddenly decided he wanted a home directly under the pavers outside of my bedroom door...so now I have to step out and leap to the side...and he rarely comes out and when I offer supplement goodies, I have to place it at the entrance to the burrow and if I go back inside and watch from the window...all you see is his head come out just far enough to take a few bites and then the food slowly gets dragged into the burrow...hilarious.....

So just enjoy their silliness....
