That is good to hear! He has all the same mannerisms as him, we are pretty convinced. Wish he could talk and tell us his story-- how he got 8 miles away!

I have tirelessly posted everywhere possible, put flyers out, etc. The Facebook community group is what did it. Someone the first time in this neighborhood posted that she spotted him (no one responded) and someone saw the post and sent it to me. She hadn't picked him up, so he was still out there and I went to every house and business, so I'm quite sure he isn't someone's pet or if so then he was let loose.
But after observing him at our house his behavioral patterns and favorite foods are the exact same, and he just looks like him though a bit skinnier, so I feel confident that he is either a rescue at this point and left there, or he is ours, either is great.
Ironically where he was found 8 miles away is the exact direction he always tried to walk and escape to.

I was thinking that too. I'm going to bring him to the vet for a check up and microchip. You are right now that we know his escape artist ways we will be insanely careful!

Thank you! I think I responded to this but not sure where the comment went. I feel confident that this one is either dumped (a rescue) or ours since the person who originally founded posted in her neighbor groups and on Facebook and he has been spotted several times (finally picked up!), then I put flyers in everyone's boxes and posted in the community groups. We're good with keeping him as a rescue if he isn't ours though he really seems to be! Wish he could tell us about the adventures over 9.5 months!

Yay! I would have given up my search (since I was starting to feel a bit obsessive) if it wasn't for people in this group saying not to give up hope. 9.5 months!

Thank you! It so crazy to have him back after almost 10 months and we don't know what happened on his travels, but he is getting lots of soaks and good food and seems happy to be back!

Took Chip to the vet for de-worming bc he was out in the wild for a bit (as far as we know). She did it to be safe but said he looks great!

So, I'm convinced that Chip was a wild caught tortoise (insert mad face). We got him from a super sketchy "breeder"(Tortoise Town) that fooled me and I've learned a lot since about them. We bought a box turtle hatchling and they sent a super sick adult Eastern Hermann's (Chip). We nursed him back to health with a good vet and of course love him.
He has always acted like a wild tortoise-- tries like crazy to get out regardless of the size of his enclosure, and walks miles a day, moving almost non stop 7am until 10pm during the warm months. We walk him maybe an hour a day and it's never enough, he wants to move more. His temperatures I believe are correct (85 enclosure, 90-95 hot spot both humid, and cool dark and dry sleeping area).
Has anyone ever heard of a tortoise like this? Not complaining, just glad he's healthy and has energy. It's just remarkable the difference between him and our other two tortoises (a Greek and Russian that we had since hatchlings from a truly wonderful local breeder) who are much more mellow.

Sounds familiar 😆 My Russian boy was wild caught and he walks a lot too! He rarely takes a nap during the day. He's always moving. And he never picks anything up from the floor . The Russian girl (I believe she was from a breeder) is really different. And she doesn't try to escape)

So interesting that your experience supports my theory. How do you know your boy was wild caught?
Same- Chip would rather walk than pick something up from the floor while our other is like a vacuum- I need it to be perfectly clean for him. I feel badly for Chip because he wants to be free (and was for a bit!), but we're trying our best to give him a lot of exercise, and overall he seems pretty happy. He eats a ton to support all his movement!

And his stool sample came back negative. I'll bring him back for another check up soon just to be sure.
