Molly,

Do you know anyone that keeps chameleons? Ask them about stress. Chameleon people usually get this concept very well. Perhaps its because chameleons have many ways that are obvious to humans to show their displeasure at any given situation. Tortoise don't have such tools at their disposal, since they don't change color and their shells limit their body posturing to some degree.

What you need to understand is that keeping them together is stressful and it is not what is best for them. Pairs are a bad idea even with the same species. Mixing species, especially these two species, just makes it that much worse. I'm hoping you will reconsider your housing choices for the benefit of your tortoises. If not, well, I tried.

I would definitely never want to do anything that would stress either of them out ! But are you saying that housing them separately is not enough?

Housing them separately is all they need. No more contact or even visual contact would eliminate the problem.

Offering them separate bowls and hides in the same enclosure, is what I am saying is not enough.

And letting them run loose on the floor is also a dangerous practice.

That's my bad I guess I didn't describe the living arrangement very well ! I meant it's one large table but with sections - they can't get to each other or see each other !

Also what are some concerns about roaming on the floor ? Besides the obvious being it's not the right temperature, humidity, lighting etc . But I'm talking about 15 maybe 20 min of putting them on the floor of their room .

My career involves working with many vets. They are friends and they know of my tortoise obsession. Because of this they can't wait to share their latest tortoise cases with me. I've seen tons of xrays of tortoises that have ingested all sorts of crazy stuff and all sorts of other injuries too. Loose tortoises get hit by doors, stepped on by other family members, chewed on by dogs, forgotten out, etc. They are safer in their enclosures and everyone who had this happen thought it wouldn't happen to them. If you just don't do it, it REALLY won't happen to you.

So better safe than sorry - def not worth the risk .

Mollydee: I just wanted to commend you on your good behavior. Thank you for being kind and gentle when so much tut-tutting has been shown towards what you intended as a fun thread.

this is esquat(sulcata) & margot(leopard) they are best friends

This I believe is what actually started the "concern" before the tut tutting began....and I also agree, happy no offense was taken in, as none was ever intended....:D

I was hoping someone would say that. Thanks Yvonne :) . Molly, you're doing great and I wish I had gotten to the "Fight Club" reference first -__- someone always beats me to it.
