Hello all,

I am making this thread because I am saving to buy a vivarium for my tort.
I want to do one of those bioactive environments but don't know a lot about it, could someone explain it? What safe-to-eat plants can I have inside the viv? Substrate?
I'd love it if you could all share photos of your vivariums, bioactive or not!!
Thanks! :)

I got a sulcata and a vivarium would be too small for him so I'm using a grow tent.
I dont know if this qualifies as bioactive setup but I got real dirt and a cactus although not directly planted inside cause it would get eaten and my substrate is full of spring tails and worms.
I tried plants but they got either eaten or bulldozed....
Here's a picture

I got pill bugs in both mine and they do a great job. I don’t have to clean up as much as I have before. Torts don’t mind them even if they might see them

Great! What kind of plants do you have in the enclosure? Vivarium or open table? Thanks!

Not quite a Viv, it's a 75 gallon tank I converted into a closed chamber. I've got a few inches of topsoil with Cypress mulch on top. There's Earthworms, isopods, and springtails in the substrate. I've got some fake Fern. Also some real Pothos growing.IMG_20200112_183054866.jpg IMG_20200112_183015616.jpg

I have my leopard covered with foil insulation to maintain 85* with 80% humidity in the whole enclosure with 87* with 92% humidity in the hide. The Russian has a plastic covered enclosure that is 84* degrees with 60% humidity-BTW both are 5’ round kiddie pools. I am building a new 3’ x11’ enclosure to finish the leopard in and eventually will be the Russians winter home. One of the members makes easy assemble cages for non-diyers too. The closed chamber is the best if at least to limit electricity use since so little heat is lost. Then high humidity is so easy. Good luck

Nice! Looks like a really good natural setup there, I love it!
I have a Hermann's yearling, had him for a year now. He's been housed in an open-topped table but I've recently been thinking about changing to a vivarium, still not 100% sure. I don't want to spend £150 for him to outgrow it in a year or two but I've seen that a viv is good for keeping humidity controlled and pyramiding down.

Thanks for sharing the photos!!
