Get this. It's human and animal safe Not safe to use any type of poison. They could carry some back into the tort area The stuff listed below is safe.
Diatomaceous Earth (food grade)

The Terro ant baits are a very good one. They are basically sugar water and boric acid, so relatively non-toxic. They work best indoors for the little harmless Argentine ants that we have here. They have not worked outdoors for any of the ant species here, but they are worth a try there.

For the outdoor ants, like yours, I have had very good results with Amdro ant granules. It is a pesticide, but used correctly its no danger to your tortoises. I don't do what the label says. I poor some directly into and onto the entrance to the underground ant lair. When the workers clear the entrance, they carry it down to the queen and the rest of the colony. They completely remove it form the surface, so there is none left for tortoises or other animals to get into, and then they don't come back up. With a very large and persistent colony, they will sometimes resurface in much smaller numbers a few feet away from the original site. I've never had a colony last past a second application. If the area is inside your tortoises enclosure, you can simply apply the granules and then cover the area with something like a laundry basket with a brick on top, so your tortoise can't get to it. The ants will remove it all and carry it underground within an hour. The stuff is bright yellow, so you can easily see when its all gone.

I have and they only go up the tree

There are two ends to that path. Where they are going to and where they are coming from. It might take some time and effort, but the ants will show you where there home is if you take the time to look.

Place ant baits in something like an old mayonaise jar with holes poked in the lid and then place the jar either sideways or almost upside down. This makes the bait almost water proof. I also might ad something else to lure them in to gather up the bait.
I do this INSIDE my pens and the tortoises are never in any danger. I then spray around the outside edges of my pens with insecticide to stop them from getting back in.
This combination has made my Florida yard and tortoise pens almost ant free.

I sprayed insecticide on the bottom of the shed (between the ground and the bottom of the shed) last night and placed two of these with stradegy.
