winter heat

I am building some houses for my tortoises and want some input on type of heat please. I was thinking about the oil filled radiators, as they seem safer to me. Any of you thoughts would be great

I use pig blankets that I purchased from Osborne Industries - http://www.osborne-ind.com/

Then I hang a red light from the ceiling to use during the night hours. My sulcatas and leopards all come and go at will, when they get too cold outside, they go back in and sit on the pig blanket to warm up.

When you use just the 250 watt red heat bulbs, what temp can you achieve when the outside temp gets down to say 32*? Tryng to relate it to our coldest winter temps in Phoenix.

Dan, the recommendations you receive will be based on the information Tom asked you for above. Younger torts might require a different heat that older torts. You said you had large sulcatas and leopards, but what are their approximate ages/sizes? Also, knowing where you live, or what your lowest outside temps/humidity are would help to decide which type of heat also. You know that famous line in the movie Jerry McGuire, "Help Me, Help You", haha.

I am not sure the ages but I have 2 sulcatas about 14" across their back, 1 sulcata abour 18" across and 2 leopards abour 8-10 inches across. Sketchy details huh? I really have no idea their age. I live in Northern California and sometimes our winters here can get to 30 degrees, but it is unusual. We get rain and rarely snow.

Right now the daytime temos are in the mid 80s and at night mid 50s to low 60s. The lady I got them froim only had boxes outside and no heat or lights, and she lives an hour from me. Everything I am reaidng says to have a heat source. Hope this helps you help me! Ha ha ha

Is this what you are talking about? What type of thing-a-ma-jig do you have it screwed into? I need a 250w bulb, but am having trouble finding a clamp lamp or something rated for more than 100w....

I am building a 4 foot x 4 foot house with peaked roof for the tortoises. It may get into the 30s-40s here this winter. Do you think one of the red heat lamps may suffice? It will be pretty air and water tight also.

I thought I had an aldabra in there. Where they were kept, there were about 20 and different varieties. I haven't seen them being mean to one another, but you really think I need to seperate them by species?? Man if that is the case, I have alot more houses and pens to build
