Ladies, Angie & MaNaAk, I really enjoy hearing of the exploits of Lola :tort:, Jacky :tort:& Daisy :tort: . This is prompting me to figure out how I can get my buddy Seymour:tort: to come along with me when I go for a walk or run errands.. I have a stainless steel screened pack for my parrot's,🦜 that I'm sure could be adapted to Seymour, then he could come out when I get somewhere. . .
I was a bit annoyed with MaNaAk for asking not to make a mess in the estate agents car! I wanted to call out "I'm not Daisy"!

I'm just letting you all know that I have stopped putting the calcium supplement on Jacky and Daisy's food at least until I know what is on Daisy's bone.

I have been thinking about that too - I believe one can over-do calcium. I give Zola a small pinch of Vetark once a week - rubbing it in on slices of cucumber which he is then fed -thus making sure he has every bit. It contains calcium and vitamins. He has a cuttlefish bone near his food dish, but he hasn't touched that for years.

How big is Seymour ? Can you carry him in your hand? He needs to be able to see things well when he is out.

One of the conditions that Daisy has is gout and the vet asked me whether Daisy had ever had food or fruit with protein. She went through a short list of foods which Jacky and Daisy had never had but today I googled fruit with protein and it listed bananas and cherries. These items can be given to tortoises sparingly but Jacky and Daisy will probably never have bananas again eventhough they love them.

I told my husband that Daisy had gout, and he said "But where did she get the alcohol from? !!!" Like me, he assumed gout was something old men who drink a lot of port and brandy got. I'm sorry about the bananas - Zola loves them too, but I never give them to him these days, as I'm keeping him off fruit - he might get a tiny bit when meeting a child who offers him some - that's all.
You will have to keep Jacky away from your wine cellar in future - save it for yourself !!

Thankyou so much @wellington. I want to try to avoid an operation if possible because above it carries a risk. He said that a lack of calcium could be one reason why she was unable to pass these eggs but then it could have been something that was happening over time. I sprinkle calcium powder on her food all the time.

PS: I think this forum is wonderful.
But the calcium is not processed without UVB...:(

What type of tortoise is Seymour?

Seymour is a Leopard Tort, He has some pyramiding, as I had not found this site when he was younger. But, he's active, eats well, get's his soaks, and is a dang sneaker. In another thread someone mentioned that they have the memory of an elephant (I think it was @maggie3fan) and I know this to be true. He knows how to find the screen door, and push his way out (I have since reinstalled the latch), I will put him in the back of the patio, which is like an obstacle course, and he now knows how to navigate that, to get out into the back yard and wander. But he's a good boy, and his care gives me a lot of love. As I'm sure can be said about Jacky, Daisy, & dear Lola . .

Thank you, Yes, he is quite handsome. I wasn't originally planing on getting him. An old roommate (Penny) wanted to get a Leopard, But she lives on SS, thus has little $. So, I told her I would get him, and she could care for him. I assumed she would take him when she moved out, But she had a Sulcata named Pee Wee that weighed about 20# (9kg) and a Russian Named Junior. So, he stayed with me, and My buddies, Bump (a Boxie) and at the time, Gigantor (a Hermann's) who had passed 2 weeks after I arrived here @ TFO. Seymour is easy going, and also Bump, but Several weeks ago, my old roommate asked if I could take Junior, as she was keeping him and a Redfoot together in the same enclosure (yes, I told her that was a No, NO!) So, Junior although he is smaller than Seymour tries to attack Seymour, as he was with the Redfoot, so they are not allowed near each other. Seymour would just pull himself in and Junior would try to climb on him, to be dominant. Needless to say that is all over now.

The vet phoned to let me know what was discussed with the referral but I missed the call due to work and he or I will try and phone tomorrow. I can't help getting a bit anxious but I know I must carry on with the rest of my life and look after Jacky as well.

I think you are doing wonderfully well, dealing with the responsibilities of Daisy and Jacky - they are such special people, having been in your family so long - Whatever happens with either of them, you are the best carer they could possibly have, and I really admire you for that.

Thankyou Angie. Tortoises are very special and people who don't have any contact don't what special creatures they are. Daisy was very hungry today despite her problems.

I have been trying today to get some carrot tops for Zola - the place we thought would have them didn't, and we drove around the area in the rain - nothing - until we came to a large garden centre, which has a food area - we finally got some - and also sat for a while looking at some baby swallows, which were perched on various bits of garden furniture on display outside. They just ignored us, and their parents came over several times to feed them while we were there -it was really lovely. They nest in various places around the garden centre barns, so are used to people.
Some years ago, when Richard was in Canada for a few weeks, visiting his mum, I used the subsidised taxi -bus service to go into the nearby town, and do some food shopping, and as I was waiting for the return taxi, a youngish swallow smashed into a glass window near me. I couldn't leave it on the ground, so picked it up and held it in my hand for several hours, in the taxi, making a cup of tea, etc - and just keeping it warm. In the end, it started moving, and opened its eyes. When it was ready, I let it go, outside - it flew off, seemingly ok. So, ever since, I have felt a sort of affinity with swallows !
I must see if Zola has eaten any carrot top yet ! I did tell him your girls recommended them.

Good evening everyone.

The vet phoned today and I have more or less been persuaded to get Daisy to the specialist. The vet was saying we need to get Daisy to be fitter for an operation if it's needed. I did feel emotional but I am doing my best. I would have to get her to London where she will stay a few days. The vet will let me know what the fees are and they will run into four figures no doubt! At least whilst she's there she is being cared for and I can get on and earn some money and look after Jacky.
