Yesterday my pups found a garter snake outback, I didn't get a picture of it though just moved it out front. This morning I spotted this little black Rat snake before the pups noticed it. After getting the picture I released him out front too.KIMG1619.JPGIt makes me happy knowing that they are still reproducing here.

A Black Rat makes a great pet.
For years I had a beautiful golden Everglades Rat Snake that lived under one of my old fish ponds liners. He was probably eating the rats that liked my neighbors mango trees.
Other than him (since) I see very few snakes here in the suburbs

My first store bought snake was a Yellow Rat Snake bought at the Capitol Pet Store on Pennsylvania Avenue DC. Just a few blocks from the Nation's Capital Building. In 1963.

Snakes! I fed my snake a snake today. :) The rattlesnake died of contact with someone's car tires. My snake didn't care.

When I was keeping hot snakes I had a nice collection of rattlesnakes. I really wanted one of each kind and then they started counting scales which increased the number it would take to complete it. So I gave up that quest. I moved on to the Bitis family, a fantastic group of true vipers.

I have a friend who collects pit and tree vipers. They are neat to look at, but I'm careful where I put my hands and feet in his snake room. I like all sorts of dangerous things in life, but I can live without that particular kind of danger. I like all snakes, but I've never had the desire to keep any myself, other than the odd crotalus here and there over the years. A friend bred his Gaboons (Bitis) and I got to put the a baby on Jay Leno's desk for. Tonight Show bit. I do love the Gaboon's and Rhino's too.

There is a particular species of rat snake called "Mexican tiger rat snake", if I'm remembering correctly. I can't remember the species name, but the thing was absolutely gorgeous and around 11 feet long. I never even knew it existed. I wouldn't mind having one of those if ever I could find one.

I've always loved the look of the trans-pecos rat snakes too, but never kept one.

These days I'm partial to the Drymarchon. I love them all. I planned to get my first Eastern Indigo this year, but decided to postpone. Planning on a Mexican Indigo (rubidus), and a yellow tail cribo next year too. My breeder friends are now working with a gorgeous red morph of black tail cribos right now and I'm trying (and failing...) to talk myself out of one of those... It never ends.

At my age now I have no interest in keeping snakes, maybe except some local copperheads. What I liked about the Bitis was their attitudes, never had one strike at me. In 1975 I paid $200 for a gravid large Gaboon from Charles Chase in Florida which was a lot of money back then. Well after a few weeks she dropped 32 not completely developed slugs. I didn't get the babies but I did have a beautiful snake. I think I told you about the shipment from Africa that I got in February of 75 and all the baby horned adders that started dropping from the females and had no way to feed them. Sent them to California to someone you now know. Jim B, out there they had plenty of skinks to feed.
