My Red Foot Tortiose Rojita has a resp. infection, we just got back from the vet. I have to inject her arm every three days, rotating the arm that i inject. I noticed wheezing a week or so ago and got her in as soon as they had an opening slot to see us. The vet said that she doesn't recommend bloodwork or anything of the sort right now because she is otherwise active and eating per usual. I personally hadn't noticed any mucus from her nostrils or mouth but when the vet tried to open her mouth, she had some bubbles come out.

The vet said she's a bit chubby so I gotta feed her less pellets and more greens, which I will do. She said her shell looks good. I'm nervous about injecting her, they showed me how to do it and said that some blood is nothing of concern. If anyone has any tips on how to best get her to recover I would very much appreciate it. I want to share some recent photos of her so y'all can let me know what you think about her carapace and plastron, and just overall health. When I first got her, her pyramiding looked a lot more significant bc of the living conditions she was in prior to me. i notice some of her shell has white in between the lines. is that shell rot or mineral deposits?

I don't think that Rojita is overweight. But offering more fresh greens and fruit instead of pellets isn't a bad idea. She will appreciate the variety.

Her carapace looks fine, no signs of shell rot. Paper-thin white line between scutes are, likely, new growth. I don't see plastron photos but I think vet should have noticed anything abnormal. Common fungal disease on plastron looks like chalky patches - it's hard to miss.

If she has a respiratory infection - double check humidity and temperatures in the enclosure. 82-86F night and day with humidity 80-90% is what she needs.

what do y’all think of her poop? I’ve been soaking her almost every day in warm water while she’s recovering. I recently have changed her diet slightly to increase greens before this her poop was solid and fine. She’s been eating collards, mustard and green leaf lettuce. Some fruit like papaya and strawberries. With her pellets every three days or so or mixed w greens.

Those stringy bits you were worried about do indeed just look like plant fibres, her stool could be a bit looser if it’s more watery greens like lettuce you’ve increased, but I wouldn’t be worried about this poop too much personally🐢💚

How long until Rojita starts making progress in her recovery? She’s still active and eating, gave her the second shot yesterday but still wheezy every now and again when breathing.

It takes two-three weeks on average. If she is not getting worse, active and has good appetite - these are good signs. Correct temperatures and humidity also speed up recovery process (I remember that nighttime temperature was a bit lower than desirable).

Thank you. I got her night temps up and it’s also not as cold in my house anymore. I successfully gave her the second shot but this third shot was hard. I tried my best and I couldn’t do it. Could try again but I worry if I try too much I’ll just injure her. This is stressing me out so much and I worry I won’t help her recover

Maybe give it another try once you’re feeling calmer about it, getting stressed can definitely make it more tricky. I’m sure she’ll start improving! Especially now temps are even warmer🥰

On the plus side, betweenshells, a sick tortoise wouldn't put up so much resistance, so your tort IS doing better.

Lol it brought me so much ease to read this. I really am trying my best here. Here’s a pic of her on the way to the vet today. Thanks for yalls support through this I don’t know what I would do without this forum.

Aw bless her🥰

This was squirt when we had to take her to the vet once, I kept trying to put the puppy pad over the fluffy hot water bottle, but she insisted on pulling it down, resting her chin like this and falling asleep the whole way back😂

hi everyone, just updating. Rojita had her 4th shot on Saturday and will have her fifth on Tuesday. She’s still eating and fairly active. Moves around for a while and rests inbetween. I still haven’t noticed significant changes in her wheezing and feel like she still has mucus. Should I be seeing significant change yet? Thanks yall.

It's possible that prescribed antibiotic doesn't work against the pathogen causing wheezing.

But you still have to do all the shots. In some cases symptoms like wheeze or whistle can be permament.

What are temperatures (day/night) and humidity in the enclosure now?

Her day and night temps range between 82-88, with it being warmer during the day. Her humidity ranges between 60-86%. Been struggling to get the humidity right but I’m trying the best I can.

Sounds good enough!

Did you cover the meshed top of the enclosure to keep humidity?

You can't bring up the humidity until you close off that mesh top...just some plastic or aluminum foil is good enuf for now...I also keep a RF...this is Layla...I keep her at an ambient temp of 85 degrees with 90% humidity...with your top closed you will get that higher humidity...Are you saying that tort is wheezing thru nose or mouth? Wheezing is the only problem?
You can expect the poop to be slightly runny because of less Mazuri and more lettuce...here is Layla and she's pooped in her food dish...you want your torts poop to look like that...Also, use mustard greens, kale, collards, dandelions with that 'lettuce'...and I add dried supplements, like calendula, or dandelion, moringa and mulberry, sprinkled over the food several times a week...I get it from...Kapidolo Farms...he's a breeder here on TFO...good stuff.
