Can tortoises be neutered?

My male leopard has mated with my female African spurred. I now have 30 eggs in the incubator. I don’t want them to have any more. The best place to divide my yard would leave one without much grass to eat. Can the male be neutered?
Is there a market for hybrid tortoise s in case all or most of the eggs hatch?

Probably pretty expensive, but vets have frequently had to amputate a prolapsed penis that wouldn't stay in, so I imagine the answer is yes. I imagine making them separate areas to live in would be cheaper.

It's a well known fact that in any case, tortoises should never be kept together in pairs.
Groups sometimes works.

Tortoises should never be kept in pairs.

Species should never be mixed.

You should destroy those eggs immediately because hybridization is a terrible thing. Be aware that sulcatas can lay eggs for 6 months or more after a single mating. Leopards can lay for five years after, but I don't think that will carry over with a female sulcata.

Leave the sulcata on the bare side and feet it hay to make up for the lost grass. Orchard grass or Bermuda hay are best. Teff works too. Timothy is too stemmy. Alfalfa is too high in protein and also too stemmy.

Hi Tom. Thank you so much for the advice. I will get some of the grass you mentioned and see if she will eat it. I know she doesn’t eat Timothy hay

None of them eat any kind of hay right away. It takes a lengthy introduction process. I use two methods to introduce hay. 1. I start feeding all food on a bed of hay. Eventually, the tortoise will start eating the hay too. 2. Chop up hay with scissors, soak it in warm water, mix it with the other food. Start with tiny amounts at first and gradually add more and more. Most people stat with WAYYYY too much. There should be so little at first that it's not noticeable. Both methods work and you can do both at the same time too.

I started by using scissors to chop up orchard grass just enough to cover the bottom of a paper plate. Then tossed a few handfuls of OG Mazuri on top and pour water from the tea kettle over all of it and then covered with a paper plate to let it steam. After about 10min I removed the top plate and folded the plate with grass+mazuri in half making a tortoise omelette it was soft and mushy enough the Mazuri blends perfectly with the orchard grass. My girl devoured it. Over time I increased the grass and decreased the mazuri and now she’ll eat plain orchard grass no problem. I do still soak it for her, she sniffs and walks right past the dry stuff 🤷🏻‍♀️

I think that hybrids are pretty popular at reptile shows and such because they are so rare. People like that. I’ve seen several videos on YouTube of the Leopcata as they call it.

Yeah, while I wouldn’t recommend deliberately creating hybrids, there is probably a market and the hatchlings could be worth more than either a pure leopard or sulcatas baby.
