interesting how the split scutes appear symmetrical in 2 of the 3 . I've seen them in natural hatched ebt , very rarely and never symmetrical …… what are the theories on cause ?

. . . and was that the reason he gave you three instead of two?

I leaned toward the belief split scutes were developmental/environmental issues , the symmetry may suggest genetic ? not that genetics cannot be influenced by environment . they look very well cared for ……...

He gave me three because I waited so long. I knew they were going to be extra or slit scutes. That is why he was selling them cheap. I got them from Bob Blome. He had 30 slit and extra scute babies

The person I got them from, Bob Blome, said it was from temp, I think, can’t remember. But, that is why I got them, you know, the ones no one wants, but I did. He still has more of them. I would guess genetics could have something to do with it.

a couple years ago I changed the fence to the box turtles enclosure ,in the process I found 7 hatchlings , one of them had a split scute , don't know for sure they were from the same nest , but all were obviously the same age …….

I missed the extra scutes on your new babies. Good for you for taking them. That is why I have my little Ster too, nobody wanted him with his irregular scutes.

    Some nice growth already!!
