I feel very bad for you. You have gone through a very difficult situation. I can tell that you really love your animals, but I agree that given your situation( lack of $$$$$ ) maybe you should wait until your finances are more stable to get another tort or any other pet. Don't be too eager to do too much too soon. You are young and seem to have a lot on your plate already. Take care!

neal... do you think he would live threw the stress of more shipping in his condition? I just feel bad for this lil guy and i dont want him to suffer til death because that would be the worst pain ever for me and the tort. i'm sorry for not putting the full report of what i was doin. im sorry for acting the way did fin but you caould have worded it more like Candy cause it would be the nice thing to do. i dont mind info. i love to hear input from others. that is why i signed up to this forum was for more info on something i have never done before and problems i have been having. but saying it like i dont care about him. when i have been asking questions and taking action on them as soon as i possible can.... im a manager of a job. i open the store or close the store. i cant just call in or not show up to take him in and i asked people to do it for me but no one was available then.right now i have $10 to my name at this time and i already borrowed $100 from a friend to pay for the vet the first time. do you think it would better to let the little torti sit at my house and suffer til friday(if he makes it) when i gat paid from what is going on with him :( or give it to a vet who can possible fix the problem before its too late? i personally couldnt live with myself if i let him sit and die. i would shoot myself. pets mean everything to me. due to the fact i cant have children and i supsitute it with pets.they are my children and if it was a child dying and i was in the financial difficutly i am in i would do the same thing. wouldnt you? i think its the best thing to do. it is a great idea to get the refund until my financial is better in cases like this.... thanks candy

Probably not, but if you were considering turning him over to the vet who may or may not do anything for him out of the kindness of their heart, it MIGHT be a better option for the tortoise to survive...long shot of course. But, do give us an update.

How are you keeping him? temps, humidity, etc...

Lea,

I'm so sorry for this situation. I'm in northern-mid utah myself. Let me know if there is something I can do to help you.

What sort of things are you doing to help this little tort out right now? What vet did you see? was it a reptile vet with tort experience or a run-of-the-mill vet? How're you housing him/her? Sorry if that's been beaten to death elsewhere, so if it has just let me know and I'll more about it later.

I would concentrate on what you have, and save your money for a new one or all the stuff your current one needs. When it comes time and you are ready, get one that is older. hatchlings are very fragile, as many people learn, not just you... and its easier to start with one that is already a year or two old.
Im not sure the Vet will take him to try to make him better without you paying. but some Vets do just that.. I hope whatever is best for the little guy is what is done.
sorry for your pain....

I read this on the other thread and thought it would be worthwhile to paste over here. This is what the vet prescribed the tort in question last week.

"Okay went to the vet. my little guy is in critical condition and if emy didnt tell me about the carrots he woulld be dead. he is dehydrated, eye infection, thin thin shell. here is what i got prescribed...

OXBOW Critical Care Herbivore 141g
Baytril Strup 1/4ox
Calcium Gluconate Syrup
Triple eye solution w cortisone
Fecal exam complete "

From what I have been reading about infection-based septicimia it seems that the most common course of action to take is to begin immediately to treat with an antibacterial and keep hydrated. The Baytril is an antibacterial. Continue with the babyfood soaks to help with hydration. I'm not familiar with the OXBOW critical care diet, but it looks like it is a "recovery diet" for what that's worth.

Lea, you sound like you're giving up and I can't blame you. However, to my admittedly untrained eye (of a brief research run through the internet) it seems like you have it in your power to treat this tort the way that might be recommended anyway. Just continue the treatment plan you and the vet came up with last week. It may not be solely an infection like Danny already said and what I've read confirms that it can also be accompanied with kidney and liver damage that make it so that antibiotics can't solve the whole problem. Then again this may be a time when it is still primarily infection-related and it may not be too late. Perhaps I'm being over-optimistic but as long as that little guy's alive he's worth trying to save and I wouldn't trust that the vet will try since the easiest answer for her is of course euthanization.

It's of course a long shot and we all know that, but in my opinion it's worth that shot. We're pulling for you two.

BTW, does anyone know if septicimia is in some way shape or form contagious? Since it has a viral/bacterial foundation does that mean that this tort could have infected its cagemates?

I to do not think you should get a replacement right now I get that money is tight right now but like some one said think it through. First you need the proper setup you need the right lights first It makes no since to get another one if the one you have is not being properly housed. See if you can get a MVB instead of a replacement tort after you get it setup and you have some money get another one not being mean just tring ot help

I've never seen septcemia to be contagious. I'd be more worried about the care of the cagemates.

LeaCrystal, Hope all goes well with your tort. I`m sure you are doing everything you can to help it. No all hatchlings are ment to last no matter what you can do. If I were you and it does not survive, I would go out and get another ASAP Do not listen to these rude comments saying you do not care, or you do not have hundreds of dollars to spend on heart surgery for something that was not ment to live. Good luck

Sometimes i feel assaulted on here lol and sometimes there is such nice things said it makes my heart melt. Ive havent seen the sick guys eyes for a week and last night i put his drops in and he just opened his eyes and starred at me. It made me start to cry seeing him just look at me. Kinda like he is thankful for my effort i feel. He ate lettuce all by himself last night. I try to feed him the critical care and he just walked straight over to the lettuce and started eatting it. I never want to sit and watch a poor helpless hatchling die in my care okay. I cry all the time even as i type this message. I have watched a puppy suffer from heart attache in my arms and i cant ever do that again. I have never tried this hard to keep something going. I dont even know why my heart stuck on this. But it did and i cant help it. I stayed up for 48 hours crying becuase i was afraid he was going to die from starvation until emy relieved me of saying babyfood would help. i read that and went straight to the store litterally seconds later. Thanks again for that emy. The vet did say that saved his life. I already messageed the man i got these from telling him i want a refund so i can put that money on the sick guy to save him. I dont want a new one if he passes cause i dont wanna go threw this heartache. Its like a divorce... it hurts my little weak heart :( thanks everyone....

You need to turn the LIGHT off at night, but leave some sort of heat source on. They need a day/night cycle.

Get a black light bulb for night time heat. It's $4 at Kmart.
I believe what others are saying is if you cannot afford a Vet you shouldn't get something like a hatchling that is going to require a Vet's help. You seem like you can't afford the equipment needed for a reptile so my suggestion would be to rescue a kitten or an older house cat but not something expensive to care for like a hatchling tortoise. Hatchling tortoises need expensive equipment to live by and a Vets treatment also. I am on a fixed income so I understand about being broke, but you obviously can't afford to keep a hatchling tortoise. I say get a cat. They're cheaper
