Tonight's the first night I'm letting the torts sleep outside in a while -- it's finally warm and dry enough for the little guys. I went to peek in on the burrow before going to bed and this giant spider was hanging in the entry.

OK, g'night kiddos!! Mommy's inside and sure you'll be fine!! ImageUploadedByTortForum1372395237.378256.jpg

That's a black widow. Very common where we are. I've never heard of them harming a tortoise, but I don't chance it. I generally like having spiders around since they keep the bugs down, but not those. And their webs are a hideous mess.

I get some black but mostly brown widows in my pens, too.
A quick squash with a shovel and you're done ;)

I would be bringing out the big guns for that thing. Glad we don't have them. However, we do have some huge black spiders that looks like they have big pincher like things. I kill every one I see. I hate spiders, even though I know they do some good.

Black widows are great. They eat brown recluses. I know they are rather poisonous, but I always leave them alone.

Just looked up spiders in Illinois. I guess we do have them. Not very common as where you are. I'd kill it or send it some place else if you don't like killing spiders.

A black widow, huh? Another exotic piece of wildlife I didn't have in NY. I usually let spiders alone, but I'll be smashing this one the next time I see her. Sorry Charlotte.

We definitely have widows in NY. At least Long Island.

Welcome to Los Angeles. They're everywhere here. I HATE them. Got bit on the foot once and got a big vein swell up past my ankle. Nasty little things. And bug spray does not kill them since they can hold their breath for days. Squash away! RIP Chareltte and good riddance!

We have tons of them here, I leave tem alone relocate them they eat lots of bugs and are not aggressive at all. I believe they are almost all 50 states except Alaska. This is do to homes and heaters making it possible for them to survive on IL or NY; they however thrive in ca, az, a lot of the southern states that are warm and hot. I've seen some huge ones around here.

If it makes you feel any better, I stuck my hand in my pool filter to dump it out and retracted my hand only to find a 3 inch spider hanging on to me for dear life. I rarely curse, but I'm pretty sure my neighbors think I have tourettes syndrome. I also have a very large, dead spider somewhere floating in my pool. I don't mind spiders or snakes, but I have to know their not poisonous, otherwise it's dead. Lol

All spiders are venomous. No snakes are poisonous.
