It's been so cold for days now. My oilfilled heater that usually works really good for Sapphire is having a hard time keeping up. The temperature has been under 30°f even in the daytime. It hasn't been this cold for so many days in 20 years or more. My son said it was 0°f last night. I hope he just meant wind-chill but I think he was correct. He watches the temps closer than me. I haven't been outside anymore then I have to. I have a cold with a cough so I'm just staying as warm as possible.Stay warm and safe Cathie. What are your temperatures and please could we have some pictures?
Thankyou very much
Natrah
I've had a cold and it's been horrible cold with lots of snow. It's been one thing after another but I'm still blessed. We haven't had a power outage! The only thing I worry about is no heat during something like that. I do have backup though. Our house is small and a Mr Buddy propane heater will work. Plus a gas cook stove will help too. The water heater is gas so that's fine. I have a lot of lanterns and lights that are battery operated so if we would have an outage I can make do. I've just been tired from the holidays and not being able to do them like I wanted to.It's dreadful, for the people and the wildlife. They are all in my thoughts.
Does anyone know how bad it's been for Cathie's area? I was hoping there would be a post from her so I'm hoping she's ok
I didn't make one homemade but Kroger's sells a nice little carrot cake for $6. I still have a couple of pieces left to devour. I'm on a see food diet.Rose made a carrot cake for New Year’s dinner dessert. Her and Nanay don't really care for it. The cream cheese frosting is to sweet for them. So that left it up for me to eat.
Finished the last piece tonight. So I have had fleeting thoughts of going on a diet. Fleeting is the key word.
I know the gopher tortoise here in Florida. Will go into their burrows during fires. Also other wildlife will use the burrows during fires. Hopefully the CDT do the same thing in Cali..Good evening everyone!
I just want to say that I'm thinking of the wildlife and animals lost in the fires as well as the people.

I have always heard that depending on what kind of bird you want you build what they like. The most important is the size hole and where the hole is located on the front of the nest. I would think that any bird would want protection from too much wind but really I've read that the most important thing is the hole size . It's different for different birds and really surprising what they prefer. My tiny little zebra finches loved little oval basket like nests with the upper front half as the opening while blue birds like a little round 1 inch hole( at least that's what I think I remember). So despite the fact that you don't like to go online to do that you possibly could find some real information there.I have a casual question....and I don't like to "ask the internet"
Which direction do you place the opening to a birdhouse?
I have NEVER been able to get birds to nest in mine.
We have one on Gods window and it faces N by NE- no one used it last year.
We have another on top of the trellis for 3 years, no dwellers, it faces S
I recently modified both with a small piece of 2x4 with a 1" hole drilled through, placed over the entrance.
Any insights are welcome!
Sorry you're not well and having to put up with such low temps, but I'm so happy to hear from you Cathie. I've been worried you've been snowed in or without power. Keep warm Jeff !We haven't seen a squirrel in 4 days! Lots of birds enjoying the sunflower seeds but not a single squirrel. Guess their high-wire act doesn't play well with snow. Stay warm guys...its 17F out at the Nook.

Has Kerry made it home with her dad yet
I didn't realize you don't have any wild lynxes! I just googled it and apparently they are extinct over there.Good evening everyone!
Keep warm Cathie and get well soon. Some horrible person has released four Lynxes into the wild in the Cairngorms! Two cats have been caught but one has died of shock and two more are still on the loose. Let's prayfor them.

They are not really wild - someone had managed to get some secretly as "pets" and then got tired of them - so kindly released them into an unfamiliar environment to fend for themselves !I didn't realize you don't have any wild lynxes! I just googled it and apparently they are extinct over there.
That is so much worse, I thought they were from a zoo or something...They are not really wild - someone had managed to get some secretly as "pets" and then got tired of them - so kindly released them into an unfamiliar environment to fend for themselves !

What idiots! The poor animals could have been shot. I'm so pleased they're safe now and hopefully they'll be able to track down the people who released them.Good evening everyone!
