Do this could replace MVB bulb?

My MVB Bulb broke this morning and I don't know how , I bought it about last month so I'm not going to buy that brand anymore.

So here's the situation:



because the MVB broke and I can't afford to buy a better one so I install a long tube light (10 watt) for lighting purpose and a ceramic heater (60 watt) I put it in the dome. So here's my question :

1. Will they get enough UV light? I always giving them sunlight in the morning start from 7 am until 11 am and put them back to the enclosure with a MVB Bulb 100 watt , but now the MVB is gone

2. Do the lighting okay? or should I put a bigger size? (the bigger are around 18 watt)

3. when it's Raining they will not get any UV light (UVA & UVB) so they only get their UV light on sunny day, is it okay?

Yes, if you can get them some natural sun light most days, then they don't need the artificial UVB. However, they still need to be able to warm up to 95+, so be sure the CHE does that. If not, you can put a regular house lamp bulb in that should make a hot enough spot. Also, if you do get another mvb, be sure the socket is ceramic, it's large enough wattage for the bulb and don't move/knock it around a lot, they a touchy. Also, if you bought it from a store near you, I would return it if you still have the receipt.

oh by the way ms wellington I got some information from my local thread that it is not good to turn on the light too long for the tortoise eye , I turn on the light starts from 11 am until 8.30 pm daily a total 9 hours , is it true?

I ALWAYS use a Power Sun UVB Bulb. Yes they are expensive, but such things are very important for a growing tortoise. I wish more people understood that a tortoise isnt a "cheap" pet. They need special things, the vet bills are very expensive, I know this first hand. Not trying to be an ***, just stating the facts.

well my last MVB broke in just 1 month so I need to prepare something before I could purchase another MVB bulb and beside it not like I won't buy another MVB bulb.. I just couldn't afford to buy another one this month

Your tort will be fine for 6 weeks or so provided some outdoor time is obtained.

If your tortoise is getting real sunshine for several hours several times a week, you do not need any artificial indoor UV. You can use inexpensive regular incandescent flood bulbs for the times when they are indoors. What size you need will be determined by the size of your enclosure and the room temps in your house. Only your thermometer will tell you if your bulb is warm enough or too warm.

The tortoise should have about 12 hours of "sunshine" every day. If he is indoors, he needs his lights on for 12 hours a day.

Be sure the light is hung at the appropriate height that should be suggested on the bulb box. The light should be on for 12 hours as Tom stated. The only bulb that would really hurt your torts eyes is the coil type or if it is way too close to the tort.

So I need to light my tort for 12 hour a day, but I don't think I could give them a full 12 hour of real sun light.
The problem is the sun light could only reach to my tort start from 7 am until 2 pm only (start from 3 pm the light is blocked with my surrounding building) that's makes 7 hours of real sunlight and the rest 5 hours using MVB bulb but since the bulb is broken and I can't afford to buy another one so I switch it with some regular heat bulb , will that do?

with my MVB before I could reach 42'C (107'F) on basking spot but with regular heat bulb it could only reach 34'C (93'F) at most, the temperature inside the enclosure without heat bulb is 27'C(80'F)-28'C(82'F)

True sunlight has a stronger UV value than the bulbs. Therefore, I believe half a day of sun or shadowed sun exposure will be sufficient for good growth.

When you say your bulb is broken, is it cracked? You know that if the bulb is shut off, it takes about 15 minutes for it to be turned on again. Some members don't know that and when it doesn't turn on again immediately, they assume it's broken. Also, if your torts are getting 5 hours of natural sun for at leas 4 days out of the week, there's no need to get a mvb bulb. They only need 12 hours of the mvb bulb only if they aren't getting sunlight at all during the week. In other words, either real sun for a few hours 4 times a week, OR 12 hours of mvb lighting, but not both.

nope it is broken the wire has come out from it place

a few hour 4 times in a week? so that means if i could manage give my tort 4-5 hour of sunlight a day so I will not need to buy another MVB? alright that's such a relief
