I was offered this male said to be Eastern. Three toes on back feet. Seller says has to be eastern because that's all they've got there. (South Carolina). Ever heard of Easterns with three toes? The "yellow" on the shell is more of a tan.

Holy crap, that's an eastern from what I see. Wow, what a beauty!

It may even be integrated, the arms look like three toed arms.

He's willing to take him back if I decide. I would like to keep him if he's eastern, but don't want him if he's not.

I will consider him if he's 3-toed.

I had an eastern female with that same color head and shell. I've seen three toes on an eastern, but the nailes weren't as big as the one you have pictured here. What really throws me off is the color of the arms. I don't know, maybe it's a hybrid.

that looks like a eastern and it looks fantastic, if you don't want it I am sure some people here would love to take it off of your hands :)
I am simply stunned by it's color.

Said to have been collected in South Carolina.

He's all Eastern :D On an Eastern you see 3 toes and the fourth is on the inside (though he could be missing his). On a Three-toed you see 2 toes and the third is on the inside. :D

Easterns with three hind toes do exist, but I'm trying to remember where I read that, maybe it was Dodd's book, or maybe there was an old discussion on it on another forum. It was infrequently documented deep within the southern half of the Eastern subspecies territory.
Very nice male! He looks big! How long is his carapace?

easterns and three toeds have the same number of chromosomes so sometimes they can interbreed. the offspring are always infertal and thats what makes them different species. ive had one of my male easterns try to breed with one of my female three toeds.

beautiful eastern!! also, three-toed box turtles, don't always have three toes, and other American Box turtles can sometimes hatch out with three toes... so can't always depend on that.

Thats not quite correct yes they can cross the offspring would be and intergrade, not an interspecies hybrid (as they are the same species different ssp.). I've see examples of this down in Kn I think it was, and have seen offsping (F2) so the main thing that seperates them is distance.
