Hey guys, I've been waiting a long time for this moment. I finally successfully hatched a red-foot for the first time. I was worried since a crack started at the bottom of the egg and started turning brown. I ended up hatching him myself, and to my surprise, he was alive and kicking. I put him back in the incubator to finish absorbing the yolk. He's a cute little guy. He has no red scales on his legs or head, just yellow. I hope he makes it the rest of the way.

He was in there about 127 days before I hatched him. I was afraid that the crack in his shell and the brown color was just inviting infection, or fungus. Luckily he was just fine. He obviously needed more time to absorb that yolk sac, but he's just about absorbed it already. Do you see a lot of red-foot hatchlings with no red on them?

Shelli, you can definitely see them if you candle them right. I use a very bright flash light since their eggs are so thick. Here is a video of me candling the little guy a couple months ago.

Oww how amazing thank you for sharing that.
I showed my 7 year old and he said.."oh no they're trying to kill it by fire".
So I was able to educate him on the red light & that the tort survived.. LOL

I remember mine too ( sorry 'bout that.. don't mean to steal from your 1st. ) -

.. soon be 6 years ago. And it still is exciting.. still get that rush when you see the 'pip'!

I've often wondered if too much light would have any ill effect on hatchlings.. since I look in on the incubators everyday also.

127 days is very common.. my first from my Brazilian took 157 days.

I've seen very few with no red.. they tend to "color" more as they age the first year especially.

Hey, I was just wondering where you've been. I haven't seen any of your posts lately. I always look forward to seeing what you have to say. Thanks for posting your first red-foot picture as well. So, you think this one will turn red eventually?

That's so cute! I love the things that kids say! I'm glad you got to educate your little boy. :)
