Is it normal for my tortoise to hiss?

Sometimes when I move to quickly around my tortoise she hisses. She only hisses when she gets scared because of fast movement. Is this normal?

Yes, its quite normal. The noise you hear isn't an actual hiss per se, rather it is the air being expelled from the lungs because the tortoise has pulled into his shell quickly and pressed the air out.

I thought that too when I got my tortoise, I find he doesn't do it much any more now he's use to me. Just make sure he can see you coming and be a little slower

My russian used to hiss when i first had him,used to frighten the life out of me,now that hes getting used to us he doesn't do it very often now.
