Hi guys, so I don't own a tortoise yet but I'm thinking about getting one and although it's been on my mind for a while and I've been doing research I'm still confused and have lots of questions so I'm just going to ask away and hope someone can help! I've seen some pretty good ideas on Outdoor enclosures but should I keep my tortoise in the house in a small enclosure at night and put it outside during the day or do they stay out overnight too? im worried about weather and Other animals getting to it overnight as the pictures I look at are very open. Ideas or help please!

Babies need a safe indoor enclosure. I would bring my Sulcata out to have supervised time outdoors for around an hour. When my Sulcata was 4-6 inches, I built a safe outdoor area for him to be out in during the day. Now that he's big enough, he's outside 24/7 . I close up his insulated house every night and he stays safe and warm. Keep reading on this forum!

I've always kept hatchlings indoors the first year, then out during the day and in at night for the second year. By the time they're three or four years old they can stay out all the time, but locked up safely inside their shelters at night.

This depends on where you live and what species we are talking about.

Generally, babies should be indoors in a closed chamber most of the time. I give them short daily excursions in a safe outdoor enclosure, but most of their time is spent in the stable warm indoor enclosure. As they grow, I let them spend more time outside, weather permitting of course. Once mine are about 8-10", depending on species, I move them outside full time with a heated shelter.
