Our school received a new leopard tortoise hatchling yesterday. He is about two months old. Yesterday we assumed he would just want to sleep and be left alone after his long trip. I gave him a quick bath to try and re-hydrate him and then left him be. Today he is still not moving much and doesn't want to eat or drink. Is this normal? Any idea on how long this behavior typically lasts? Also, any suggestions on how to make him more comfortable? The school is very excited to have him but I'm keeping everyone away until the tortoise becomes more comfortable in his new environment.

Welcome to the forum! It is totally normal for new tortoises to be shy, and not want to eat.
Please give these a read to make sure you are keeping him perfectly comfortable :)

Please talk the school into not getting tortoises as school pets. Chances are they are not going to provide everything needed for the tort. Closed chamber enclosure, humidity, lights, heat, timers, thermostats, etc, etc. All needed and even more so for a poor tort at a school that is empty after around 4 and on weekends. Specially in an Illinois school where it gets really cold at night and no heat on weekends.

I agree with Wellington. Does the school have a way to keep him outside, build a heated night box, large (8x4 feet) enclosure before he is large enough to go outside full time? Tortoises also don’t like to be handled and like to be left alone, and aren’t the best things for children.
