Hi all,I have become an owner of a 15 yr old tortoise named Fred, we live in the Middle East and his previous owners had to leave suddenly so were unable to see if they could transport him to the UK.
He was rescued from a pet souk 15 years ago and was being kept in a wire bottom birdcage! He now spends his days in in a large garden with lots of shady spots.
I would like to know what species he is so I can research how to care for him in the best way.the previous owners did not know and he never came with any papers.
I think he may be a spur thighed??
Any advice greatfully recieved

Welcome!
He looks like an Egyptian tortoise.
Others will either soon confirm it or correct my guess.
At any rate, once the identification has been made, we have sections to read ALL obout care and feeding of each type.
You found the right place!!
It looks like a nice tortoise.

Hi, and welcome to the Forum!

I see spurs on the back legs, so my guess would be a Graeca also. Let's wait for HermanniChris to tell us for sure.

The tortoise is pretty fat too. Hasn't missed too many meals! :p

Welcome to the tortoise forum.

You did a nice job of posting several pictures to have her identified. Hopefully a very definite answer will be here soon.

What are you feeding her ?

Wow,Thank you for all your replies! So Fred is a Fredwina! ;) She loves in an enclosed garden with lots plants, the old owners used to feed her Romaine lettuce and tomato and a few flowers but i have read that should be in moderation only. We have two hibiscus plants which are flowering at the moment so she has been having them with jasmine flowers. She does seem to have a very good appetite!
