Overheating, previous penile amputation.

I’ve been meaning to post an update but every time I think to something comes up. Anyway, Smaug did end up having elevated white blood cell count, pointing to infection.

He did a whole nother course of antibiotics. He seems OK but still super low energy and doesn’t really want to do anything but he does eat. He just eats and then goes and lazes around all day. It’s really hard to know what is an actual problem versus him still adjusting from the whole surgery and overheating situation and everything. Totally unlike him to not be trying to constantly escape his pen to get to females, but that could just be his new normal after amputation or he could possibly still have something underlying. I may take him back for another blood test soon to double check that there’s not STILL an infection. I’m just not happy with his energy levels, but overall he’s not doing too bad.

Smaug has been doing great these past few months. Fantastic appetite and once I allowed him to be around other tortoises again, his energy levels have actually come back

He actually lives with his daughter now which is one tiny perk about being amputated, I don’t have to worry about any inbreeding. Interestingly, he has not tried to breed anyone. I always was curious if he would try since their testes are internal and not removed with amputation, I thought he’d still have the ‘drive’. He seems to have lost his mojo in that sense but seems 100% back to normal in all other ways I’m glad my boy pulled through.

Yes he lives in a group with 9 others I recently split my cherryheads into two groups. There’s 6 giant 10lb + plus cherries that have their own space and the smaller / younger ones are together. Smaug is right around 7 lbs and since he no longer tries to breed I like having him with the smaller gentler more chill group.

I don’t have any recent pictures of them all together but I have had to put them up at night the last couple days with temps dropping. Here’s a screen grab from their camera. He’s in the floor space on the right somewhere lol.
