how far should we downgrade our tortoise 20-gallon tank?

Tomorrow me and my mom are going to look for a temporary tank for my red-footed tortoise since were moving in the next month or two. What's the best temporary tank that's somewhat easy to take in a car and also has enough room for him to move around.
what kind of turf and light should we use that can be enough for the next month or so. is there any type of material the tank should be made of?

he's been in the same tank for over 20 years so we want him to get used to the new size before moving.

(we have a carrier for the 6 day road trip, dw we arent putting him in the tank)

Can you post pictures of the tortoise and enclosure please. An expert will be able to help however I am not understanding how a red/yellow foot tortoise could live in a 20 gallon tank for 20 years. Is it a turtle or a tortoise? This is why I am asking for pictures. Thanks

I'd also like to know if he's been in a fish tank for 20 years.
The answer is he can be transported in a tote or a box just slightly bigger that he is. (For a few hours.) But as far as "downsizing" from a 20 gallon aquarium....For a tortoise that should have 24 square feet as a minimum enclosure space....?
Hopefully we misunderstood your question.
Are you're keeping that tortoise in a 20 gallon tank and seeking something even smaller?
This would be animal cruelty.
A 20 gallon tank is already a torture box. It is 100% inhumane.
(If true,)

ya, my bad. I thought it was 20 turns out it's a 50 gallon. here's a picture, u can kinda see him
(I'm sorry for the confusion we use the metric system so conversion was pretty weird)

we just want something where hell be comfortable in for the next 5 months. were staying in a 2 bedroom apartment and the 50 wont fit, so we want something that's comfortable for him

That looks like a box turtle, not a tortoise. Can you take pictures of the turtle/tortoise?? Someone can help you with an identification of your pet

If that's him visible in that one photo...it sure isn't a Redfoot.
But that's only slightly less alarming.

It's a box turtle with a n overgrown beak that needs attention. When you allow the beak to get overgrown it tends to break off and not in a good place, but maybe in a hurtful place.

If your new home can't support the 50 gallon tank then perhaps you can find a large plastic tote that would suit. Just get the biggest one that fits the space, because they need a lot of room.

This thread gave me a good laugh this morning.

The mods here are really super about keeping things "where they belong" so when I opened box turtles and saw a Red thread.......I was confused.

Welcome Mr MM to the club! There are some super care sheets at the top and you definitely need to read them my new friend......LOL

Come on, you thought a box turtle was a Red Foot Tortoise....that's funny as heck!

When you think about a box turtle, try to think "wet" and boggy............not dry and arid like some torts like.

You have a great little guy, have you had him for 20 years?

jeff
