What kind of tortoise is going in it?
Yes. You'll need mulch or something that can hold humidity.
Sand is no good at all. Maybe for desert lizards. Not for baby tortoises.

What species is this for? How big is your tortoise and enclosure? Sand is not a substrate to use. It does not provide any humidy, it's dry, and the tortoises may ingest the sand upon feeding which can get blocked in their intestines and they will no longer eat and can die from the sand impacting. What kind of lightning did you get? Also the red lights are not a good choice by many members on the forum. It's disorienting to the tortoise. You can use a ceramic heater emitter for heat without lights.

Sulcata which is a couple months old, ah I was told to get an infrared light as it needs to be on 24-7 and I have a a recommended uv light from one of the forums on here, so I should swap out the sand for the soil mixture I have? It's specifically for tortoises. What heater would be better I can almost remove the red bulb and get another ? Thanks.

Get a ceramic heat emitter instead of the red bulb. It puts out heat without any light at all. Torts need dark to sleep well.

I use Mercury vapor bulbs for uva/uvb & heat for daytime and I use ceramic heater emitters for night time. They are at petco and petsmart.

I use fake plants. Many use real plants. I did have real plants like spider, hibiscus, and snake plants. But I don't know too much about plants. Someone will help you with that :)

Hi Kane:

In my opinion, those manufactured tortoise tables are a big waste of money...especially for a sulcata. Baby sulcatas grow so darned fast, he'll out grow that space in just a few months.

Please read the Sulcata care sheet that's pinned a the top of our Sulcata section, and you'll get all kinds of good info on taking care of your new baby sulcata.

I use a Mercury Vapor bulb and a Ceramic Heat Emitter......I leave the CHE on 24/7......The MVB is on a timer for 12 hours a day. The mvb is UVB, heat/basking spot all in one bulb. The CHE keeps the temp from dropping too much at night for the babies.
