frankel just became my favorite torot on this thread! (besides my own but they are still young)

He is beautiful and so far the smoothest leopard that size I've ever seen! KUDOS!

I bought my tort from a petstore where they specialize in tortoises and turtles on March 28th. They told my they couldnt tell the gender.. is it too soon to tell? and how can you tell?

you can tell the sex somewhere around 5 or 6 years old.

How are you keeping this little one? Your Daughter looks excited to have a little friend...one that will likely out live her natural life! Gotta Love a Tortoise!:p:tort:

Great thread! You all have some lovely leopards!! I don't have any recent pics of my ladies, will have to take some. But I do have some recent shots of my special boy Trisomy. I know no tortoise is going to earn a diploma, but this boy definitely got the short end of the gene pool. He is a slow grower and spends his whole life seeking out people or animals to chase, he will even 'follow' low flying planes from the nearby airport. Sweet boy, but very *slow.*

Tried to throw a flower in for size comparison and they were both right around 24lbs last time I weighed them 5-6 months ago.

Here's my girl

She's sooooooop sweet! In he first photo she looks like she's having a burp and in the second she looks like she's really pleased she had that burp!

I'm afraid I got my two Leopards muddled up!!!! Julie is the one with the really smooth shell while Frankel's is a wee bit unsmooth. Here is another photo of Julie. She is 16cms long ( six and a quarter inches) long Frankel is 19cms (seven and a half inches)When I bought them last October they both measured 12.5cms.

A couple of beauties! They almost look like twins. Must be hard to them tell apart.

No...does anyone? I have never had a problem keeping leopards together, they are mild mannered and get along swimmingly! I would have to reference the record book to be sure but believe the ones in the pic are probably around 6 maybe 7 years old.

This is Lucy. I know very little about her. I have a gaggle of turtles and one other tortoise. A local pet store begged me to give her a great home. They knew I would do all I could to get her what she needs. I am doing my best. Her pyramiding is from before I had her. She is no longer in a "dry" environment, nor in a tank. She has a much better diet now too. NO MORE packaged tortoise pellets either! If I am thinking correctly, all of her new growth should be flatter, correct? Will any of the valley's ever fill in at all, or is that the way they will always be? I heard someone say she may be 6 or 8 years old, but I have no idea. She is about 8 or 9 pounds now. Let me know if you have any ideas about age, ?? . Thanks! Dawn

Hard to say about her age...I'd say around 10ish years old. The pyramiding will not correct itself, but the more serious issue with her is the obvious MBD. It's good to see that she's outside. I'm sure you are giving her a good diet as well. The best thing you could do to prevent the pyramiding from becoming worse is to keep her hydrated.

She is outside anytime the sun is out and it is warm. She also has a cool new tortoise house that I built her. It is heated and insulated. ;) her eyes seem happier too. I know that sounds weird, but when someone or something is not happy you seem to notice it in their eyes. She gets a healthy varied diet, misted every time I am by her pen, and soaks every other day. She has fresh water available all the time. I am going to set up a timed sprinkler on her pen, so it gives her a small mist several times a day. She seems happy as a clam now. I think she lived exclusively in someones home and was kept warm and dry. Ugh.
What would you suggest for the MBD? Could she also get calcium injections? I know nothing about them. ????? I do give her calcium powder on her food every day too.
Thanks for your help Neal

I would recommend seeking a vets opinion before doing anything like calcium injections though.

If I were you, I would just stick with as much outdoors time as possible. I think you should only supplement just a couple of times a week. Three times a week, maybe, at the most...Too much supplementing can be a bad thing too.

Thanks. The only reason I put the calcium on every day is because she tends to try to eat around it, so I am not truly sure how much she gets. I may miss a day here or there if she is just eating weeds and grazing, so that way I bet I am pretty close to ideal calcium. Ha ha thanks. I wouldn't do the calcium injections without my vet recommending it. I was just curious if anyone had ever tried them and what the outcome would be. It would seem it could give them kidney stones? Maybe not? That's why I was asking. Thanks so much! ;)

Exotera makes a calcium block with Cactus. WalkingRock also dislikes calcium powder, but gobbles these calcium blocks quick! (eats it in about a months time)

Interesting that the one with split scutes is a male. :). Looks like they are personable.
