Hi, My female Leopard Tortoise Frankie was stolen from a tortoise sanctuary in Anderson, California May 2023. I have a strong suspicion she was actually sold, but I can only go with what I've been told. She had her name written in permanent marker on her shell on the back bottom. She is about 25 years old. I am heartsick and broken about this! I was just fostering her there, so she was still my tortoise. They have done absolutely NOT ONE THING to try to find her. And they said their cameras didn't pick anything up.

If you know of anyone - probably anywhere in California - that received a beautiful female leopard tortoise around that time, that is undoubtedly being used for breeding, please please get in touch with me. I am offering a very generous reward for her return.

Thank you for reading this and keeping Frankie in mind.

Good luck. Hopefully people will check for the marking.
You can try posting on the tortoise section of faunaclassified.com

Are police any help?

Can you provide the "sanctuary's" name and contact info so that the rest of us can avoid them and warn others about what they did to you.

I hope you get your tortoise back. {{{hugs}}}

Katherine is a wonderful lady she runs the sanctuary they are a true 501c3 she was not sold, things happen, it’s my understanding that the gate was being replaced when she went missing she is presumed stolen. With nothing picked up on camera there really is nothing they can do.

Sadly they were very irresponsible. When changing an enclosure gate for any animal, the animal should be placed somewhere safe from escape. That's the whole point of fencing and gates. Hopefully they learned a lesson and don't let it happen again.

From OPs previous posts, they didn't even file a police report. So it's not just that they couldn't do anything, they didn't do what they could have.

How long was your tortoise fostered before going missing? Have you been compensated at all since they 'lost' the tortoise?

I'm sorry for your loss. I too would be devastated If any of my leopards came up missing no matter what the reason

It is Tortoise Acres Rescue & Sanctuary in Anderson, CA. The police have not been any help, even though the value of my tortoise is well over $950, which is the threshold of considering a theft a felony. I understand finding a tortoise is not high on their list, but it's time for me to get back in touch with them. The sanctuary had not filed a police report, which I ended up doing.

Of course there was plenty they could have done: filed a police report, contacted all the companies & workers who had come through that day, sent out notices to everyone they knew asking for help/tips, posted on Craigslist, offered more than the measly $50 reward they committed to... all of the things I had to do from hundreds of miles away.
Maybe consider posting on reddit r/tortoise too. I hope you get her back
Thank you. I will not ever stop looking for her.

She was there a year, and no, they did not compensate me nor did they do anything to try to find her. I know if someone came on my property and stole something, I would be working HARD to bring them to justice.
