Bubbles from the mouth usually mean over heating, or that the tortoise has eaten something toxic. Bubbles from the nose typically indicate a respiratory infection and are usually caused by cold temperatures.

They should never be kept under colored bulbs, and whatever that stuff all around the tortoise is not suitable substrate.

From what I can see, it looks like this tortoise has been in a very dry environment. That is not good.

What you can do is make sure the temperatures are all correct, and then soak this tortoise in warm water for 30-40 minutes a day.

That tortoise is not a baby, as you thought. The growth lines show about 10 growth spurts, so maybe 8 or 9 years old.

What is the temperature of the enclosure at tortoise level? Soak him daily for about a half hour, and make sure his enclosure is around 80-85F degrees, with a cool hiding place where he can get away from the heat.

Oh poor baby😭I’m wondering if it’s like Tom suggests, overheating or something toxic, what are the temperatures like? So basking temp(directly under the bulb), overall day temps and night temps?

As touched on, you definitely don’t want to be using a red bulb, and I’d switch out that substrate to something more appropriate.

At his/her size, he’d benefit from a large closed set up that maintains a higher humidity.

As well as Toms links, hopefully these ones can help!

This thread covers correct equipment(uvb, heating bulbs, lighting etc), correct levels, importance of a closed chamber for younger tortoises(only way to maintain the humidity you need), appropriately maintaining the humidity, safe substrates, there’s lots of visual examples for everything, and a really handy diet link to check out! with a greenhouse, the lower the ceiling height, whilst still allowing for recommended bulb height, the better, but I’ll include some more ideas below for closed chambers

This covers a bunch of other closed chamber options, some do work better than others

This one is good to go over and keep on hand, it’ll help you avoid the wrong bulbs, substrates, housing etc, I always encourage double checking purchases on the forum too before buying😊

I really hope they help, and I certainly hope this baby starts doing better, temperatures are always most important, make sure you’re using some digital monitoring for your temps and humidity. Always feel free to ask further questions, welcome to the forum and thank you for rescuing this sweetie!🐢💚
