So just a little but ago I had koopa out giving him a good soak out on this nice day. I pick him up and he closed his shell all of the way!! I'm just posting because I thought they didn't start to grow their hinge until a couple of years old? He's only 8 months. I've had some that hinge up much earlier than others. Some of my adults have trouble closing completely lol. It's got a pretty flared shell for a 3toed. Looks healthy though

Well when I bought him he was supposed to be an eastern..I'm thinking he's a hybrid, he does have three toes and stumps on his hind feet.

And when I took him to the exotic vet, she said he looked fantastic, she also couldn't put a label on him so she just called him a three toed lol

Where did you get him from? That might help clear up his identity

He certainly looks like a three toed boxie to me.

I agree - looks like a three toed to me as well. I believe the hinge closing timeline probably has more to do with size than age (they grow faster in captivity with good meals!) His shell is beautiful!!!

My 7 mos old hatchling isn't closing at her hinge yet. LOL you made me look. She is on the stuffed shell (chunky) side of life, but doing great health and growth wise. Very interesting that your's is able to close already, terrific too! I hadn't ever thought about it before, nor paid much attention as to what age my other hatchlings were able to close up. I'm calling her a she, since she incubated and hatched in extremely warm weather, only time will tell, but I've never had a male hatch here before.

I agree, yours looks like a 3 toe to me.
