I built a 5' x 4' indoor habitat for my babies and I could not figure out a decent way to close it in for humidity. I bought some heavy plastic and thought about using thumb tacks to hold it down on one end and let it "drape" over the other side but that didn't work real well and the humidity and heat escaped. So here is what I came up with.

To tack it all down was a pain. I had to always pull out the tacks to check on the little guys. So, I placed tacks all around the enclosure and placed an earth magnet on each one. Then I covered the enclosure with the plastic and put a magnet on the other side of the plastic. Now I had two magnets attached to each tack, one on the inside and one on the outside of the plastic. now when I check on my boys, I lift the cover and it goes right back where it needs to be thanks to the magnets and the thumb tacks!!!

It is a work in progress right now but I will have it looking decent this weekend. The boxes you see on top and underneath are grow boxes that currently house my rescue baby box turtles until I can get them to my Brother's garden.

Tell me what you think please.

Some thinking into that one. But what ever works. How about stapling the plastic to a wood frame and hinging the frame on? Just a thought, I like your cheaper, fast idea too.:D

Very cool. :) I'm sure you get plenty of air exchange each time you open the flaps.
I'd have thought of doing it the way Wellington suggested. But this way works too and it just shows how not all minds come up with the same ideas!

I tried that idea using bamboo rods. The problem I had was sizing the plastic just right and making corners. Air circulation is fine. I have a 4 inch gap at the cool end of the box and every time I open it the air circulates as well. Definitely not a perm solution but it actually works quite well. Hopefully I will be able to get a framed top done soon. Thanks for the input. I thought it was a good idea to at least get a closed top on there for the time being.

Oh, and this gives me a higher top so that the lights can hang inside the enclosure instead of shinning through holes in the top.
