Hi all

I'm getting 4 homes hingebacks soon, just in the progress of making there enclosure. Thought I'd share my progress and thought and of coarse collect all your guys thoughts and ideas.
The enclosure is 20 square ft.

started with 2 boxes
photo 2 (1).JPG
Then lined them with thick pond liner stapled to box, not pulled tight to accommodate all the weight that will go in there.
photo 3 (1).JPG
Then fixed 2 boards across and cut a hole for the CHE bulb.
photo 3.JPG
Placed lamp shade on held in place with cable tacks also put perspex lid on to keep humidity high.

Tortoise room coming on a treat, my mrs is a very understanding lady. :)

Fantastic. Ivy is toxic but I have never seen anyone touch it. I tend to go on any limbs with plants that are toxic being in with tortoises. But my enclosures that are planted are very big. I think being in smaller indoor enclosures if steady away from toxic plants.

OMG...I think you have a problem!! LOL!!! That set up is cool!! Are you getting the yellowfoots too?
Its a good problem though. lol Its the same person with the yellows, Told her i'm not ready for them yet, When I build my tropical house I will get some, she says she will hang onto them for me for a while. When she brings the 4 hinges to my house she's also bringing the yellows for me to look at. This will be the first time i've met her in person. Can't wait. the things she has shown me and the stories she has told me. wow. That 107yr hermanns she has is awesome isn't it. She's got allsorts, got 11 reds too. 1 is a female cherryhead wc twenty years ago. Says its her favourite, in mint condition, won't let me have her. She's never mixed any of her torts, not even yellows n reds.
I didn't think it was fair to put yellows with reds in such close quarters, need space to get away from each other.

Me to. I spend hours watching them, its taking over my life:)
The hingebacks that i'm getting are looked after virtually the same as reds are. They eat more fruit and protein though. The homes hingeback is classed as servilely endangered. The 4 i'm getting are 2 male and 2 female, laying eggs regular. Hope they are fertile. Not interested in making money out of torts at all, but would love to breed these, and get to know everything about them.

Hello all

I've been working on my new table today. Only worked on the outside part, so the plants can settle in and I don't know what they have been fed with. So for a couple of weeks I can just water them with no feed and know they are fertiliser free for my torts.
At the moment I think its a bit bare but everything should grow.
Please anybody, tell me if there is any plants in there that are not good for torts.
And I would appreciate anyone's advice, can change anything around at this stage.
For the inside I don't plan on putting any live plants in, just moss, hides, dead leaves, water dish, and other obstacles create cover.
There is 5" depth of coco in both sides with cyprus mulch on top.
The lid will lift off closed side for feeding and cleaning.
Do you think I should put there feeding slate on the inside humid area or the UK rain forest side.
Thank you all

You have BEAUTIFUL enclosures! I love it.
Just curious, did you make or buy the staring box? That's a nice thing, I liked it a lot.

I made the lid but bought the box. All it is is a cargo box made from rough wood. Ironically I use them at work for shipping demolition blades to the USA. Small world.

It sure is awesome! I don't know too much about plants really, sorry. I think the feeding part is personal preference really.

I love it but... they will climb right out of that beautiful fenced in area.

Thank you, will make the fencing higher. I didn't ant solid sides to give the plants more light. The lady who I'm getting them off said the same.
She say they are very lively and clever torts. Thanks again. Are the plant types ok for torts. :)

Hi Jacqui. Did you mean the height of the fence wasn't high enough or the spaces between the lats. Spaces are about 2" wide.

Thank you

Not higher, but you need some kind of a inward lip, atleast something that blocks the corners. Hingebacks I believe are even better at climbing then the famous Russians are. ;)

They will use all the horizontal boards to either climb on or to pull themselves up and over with. Same with those beautiful plants in the corners. Not sure about the spacing between, but am guessing your animals will be big enough not to squeeze through, but they will try. I think all the plant types will be fine. Hingebacks tend to not be more the a nibbler on their plants. More often plants die from being trampled, not eaten in their enclosures. I do like what you have done so far. :)

Hi

I have raised the height of the fencing. It is now 17" from substrate level to top of fence. also the 1st 7" is plain wood so they can't climb the horizontal slats. Was thinking about the inward lip idea, but went this way instead.
So about the plants. Is what you are saying there should not be a gap big enough for them to get round the back of them?

Thanks
