i poured some water over the substrate and a big old worm came out of the dirt. (didn't know it was in there) and sparky practically flew over to it and grabbed it didn't know russians would do that. he proceeded to swallow it down while it was still wiggling the savage lol. here's a couple pics and a bad video.

That nightcrawler is longer than Sparky! LOL! Where did you get the substrate? Looks like you've got the moisture just right, for that worm to be doing so well...until now, that is. :D

I am glad you caught that! You don't normally get to see pictures of a Russian going after a worm (or anything of that type). Shows why tortoises have survived for so long, they never pass up food even if it is not what humans think they should be eating. ;)

i got it off ebay. it was about £15 for 10 blocks. you mix it with hot water and it swells up. i have a couple inch of top soil on bottom and 5 inch of coir on top. i pour water over it every few days with a kids watering can. i'm assuming the worm was in the soil when i scooped up the mole heaps lol.

I have two 9 mo old leopards that spend their days in a 10' x 10' outside surround. There is a large ceramic low dish for water. One day after a good rain I looked into their pen and Hyde was sitting in the dish with an earthworm wiggling in his jaws. While I watched he scarfed it all down. Wish I'd gotten a pic but I was so mesmerized I didn't think of it.

I read a post someplace about a huge Sulcata that waited outside a gopher hole till the gopher came out and snatched it up killing it. Chomped some of it down fur and all. Wish I could see a video of that !

They are survivors, and just when we think we know all about them our torts can surprise us. :)

Oh, maybe there was an egg in the top soil? Cool!

They're fully grown and sexually mature by 6-8 weeks. Maybe you'll find more in there. ;)
