I realize that it must be either a fungi or a mushroom but does anyone know for sure what it is specifically? Kerry says it stinks..

In Michigan when I was a kid and still now lol there were these things we called puff balls. They look like the end of the one you have growing but didn't have a stem like that. We would smash them with our feet and a puff powder of the brownish color of the ball would come out. They did stink but not real bad.

It is called a stinkhorn and it is a type of fungus. We have them here in GA, also. They seem to grow in mulch and/or compost because they feed off decaying wood and help it decompose. And yes, they smell REALLY bad!

The odor is supposed to attract insects to help disperse the spores

These "eggs" sat on that deck rail for days. Then it rained and darn if the big one didn't begin to grow. Kerry tossed it in the woods it was already 4" long!
