When I was a child, it was perfectly normal to have all your teeth out and get a set of false ones at a young age - even as a 21st birthday present, to save pain and money in later years . I remember asking the dentist as a child
at what age I would be likely to need false teeth(because the idea really creeped me out !). He said at about 45 to 48 was the usual age. So since I am a lot older than that now, I am doing ok - having had a fair bit of treatment over the years, of course -(not from that dentist, though !)

Yeah, dental care here in Finland used to be bad too. Here false teeth were a common 15th birthday gift! My grandpa told me that back in the 40s and 50s blowing cigarette smoke on a tooth was a common way to relieve a toothache. In the 60s and sthe start of the 70s a toothbrush was considered a luxury product and a whole family might share one.

I wanted to expand on this. You have to remember that after WW2 Finland was still a developing country and got development aid from 1945 to 1975 from the UN and The World Bank. Initially, the aid was food and clothing, and later aid and funding for building environmental and industrial facilities.

From what I have read about Finland, your country has made huge progress, as well as being beautiful. It sounds like a great place to live.
In the UK we didn't have a National Health service until 1945, I think, and dental treatment was a luxury for the rich, as was most medical treatment. We are fortunate to be in such a different era.

P.s. I looked it up, and see the NHS officially began in 1948, in fact.

Good evening everyone!

I hope you're all okay. I was pleased with my hygienist appointment apart from the dentist not noticing the chapped tooth anyway we are keeping an eye on it.

I didn't mention this but I had a bit of sad news yesterday. Mum's cousin who had Alzheimer's and admitted himself to a care home just over a year ago has passed away from a chest infection. He was hospitalised on New Year's Day and he seemed to improve before going downhill. He slipped away on the 10th January and I shall be sending a card on behalf of myself and my brothers. I shall also be writing to his elder brother and trying to offer support where I can. Sadly my grandmother didn't get on with her sister-in-law and mum grew apart from her cousin's as adults. I am okay but I am pleased that I have kept in touch with them since mum and dad's deaths albeit at a distance.

Goodnight everyone

Hello Natrah - will you celebrate Burns Night on Friday ? We do, because Richard has Scottish ancestry, and was born in Glasgow - so we bought a haggis today. Richard puts the haggis on tinfoil, and slices it in fairly thin slices, then bakes it in the oven until it is all crispy, and we have it with mashed potato and sweet potato, rather than swede ! Also we put a book of Robert Burns poems on the table, as it has a portrait of him on the cover.
Tomorrow is our wedding anniversary, then on Monday it's Zola's half-birthday. I hope it will be a nice day, so we can take him for a special drive somewhere, but I think we are in for some fairly problematic weather for a while.
I hope all is well with you
Love to all our friends from Angie and Zola xxxxxxxxxxx

Good evening everyone!

Yes I have been thinking about your anniversary Angie and I will post again tomorrow morning. That Haggis sounds lovely but I hope you can all do something tomorrow and that everyone will be okay in Storm Eowyn. Sue I hope you're battling down the hatches. We were hoping to celebrate my friends 60th birthday on Saturday but her mother's not very well so we're not sure what's happening. My friend is going to phone tomorrow night anyway just to confirm.

Goodnight everyone

Sorry Natrah - I was wrong about Burns Night - it's tomorrow-(Saturday). It has been an extremely windy night - a very noisy wind, too - I have hardly slept at all. I don't think there is any actual damage to the house, though. Yesterday morning we had a whole range of weather within a couple of hours - heavy rain, hail, snow and sunshine (only very brief sun - not enough to warm things up at all). I wonder what we shall get today ! !

Happy Anniversary 🎉 🎉 🎉 🎉 🎉 🎉 🎉 🎉 Angie and Richard!

Any plans today? Sorry about the weather we've had the same thing here except for snow. I had trouble sleeping last night because legs felt cold and then I could here the neighbours again. I've emailed the landlords and spoken to them and they are going to see what they can do about it. I think the neighbours maybe trying to be quieter but they are not aware that if you want to stay up all night other people can hear your movements.

Happy Anniversary Richard & Angie 👩‍❤️‍💋‍👨
Weather wise it seems we are getting off lightly….it a bit windy, heard it in the night but nothing too bad. We’ve had some rain but not heavy. Sun is out, it’s just about 10 degrees outside but bit less in the wind. Could be more rain over the weekend. Saw on the news Cornwall had a mini tornado at a caravan/holiday park 😯Looked like quite a bit of damage.
Sorry about your noisy neighbours. Seems the landlord is dragging his feet dealing with it. Bet if you withheld your rent he’d soon deal with it. Unfortunately you’d be the one getting evicted!

Thankyou Sue.

I don't they know who their dealing with here because my experience of being a carer to dad with Alzheimer's and the inheritance issues are his death have given me strength to deal with anything. I had some more sad news today in that my friend's husband who was in hospital following two (and also pneumonia) has sadly passed away from COVID. I shall be phoning my friend this weekend and sending another sympathy card. The weather seems to be okay at the moment but we had a fierce downpour this morning.

Thank you everyone for your good wishes - Richard and I had actually been together a long time before we got married, but finally decided it would be a good idea to make it official , as neither of us had any close family left in England, and if there were ever problems to do with health or legal stuff or anything, it would be good to have each other as next of kin. And, of course, we had Zola, who needed us both to take care of him ! In fact, I had been married previously for several years, but my husband became violent, and an alcoholic - I tried to help him, but I just couldn't cope, especially being in a very stressful job myself, so I left him, and lived by myself - then I met Richard, who was a complete contrast to him!
The wind was really fierce all night, and I hardly slept at all,but no real damage round here, fortunately.
Love to all from Angie xxxxxxxxxx

Good afternoon everyone!

I've just spoken to my friend who lost her husband and she says that she's fine but she has COVID. Anyway we'll be looking out for her and making sure she's okay. Angie I'm glad you all enjoyed your anniversary but I'm sad that you were with someone who was violent and alcoholic. I'm glad you managed to get away and find Richard. Zola has completed your family just like Jacky and I are family.

I'm going out for a meal at Tomassi's later so enjoy Burns night.

Hello Natrah -we have just finished our baked haggis, followed by our favourite icecream, which is Mackie's from Scotland, so very suitable !
You are right about Zola completing our family - Richard and I have been reluctant to get a dog, although we love them - they often have fairly short lives, and it would be so painful when they died. But with Zola, at least we can hope he will live as long as we do, and he is all we need as our family. I sometimes say he is the most important part of our family, and it really is true - he comes first in all our decisions ! That's what is so lovely about the TFO - people can understand that.
Love to you, Jacky and Angel Daisy, and to all our forum friends from Angie and Zola xxxxxxxxxxx

Good evening everyone!

Angie I have to ask if you're all okay? Over on Cold Dark Room Lyn is very concerned about you and says that several areas are without power. I had lunch at the Cliffs Pavilion as usual and I could literally see Storm Herminia coming. Sue are you okay and Edward's Servant how's the weather in Finland? Also I haven't seen Chef for sometime.

I had a good meal at Tomassi's with my friend yesterday and she had Salad Nicoise followed by Maple Nut Sundae and I had Roast Chicken followed by Sticky Toffee Pudding. I have been oxygenating Jacky's fridge each day and she seems okay. I hope Zola, Dickie, Edward and Sherman are okay.

Goodnight everyone

Natrah, Sleeping Beauty and Angel Daisy

PS: I shall send a card to mum's cousin's wife tomorrow and then I shall send another card to my friend.

It is still unusually warm and slippery. The snow has melted quite a bit. There is about 18 cm of snow currently left.

I saw Chef posted in the Nut house thread yesterday.

Hello Natrah - we have had all sorts of weather today - it was very windy, with heavy rain, in the morning at first so we decided to take Zola to some woods nearby, rather than driving to the sea, as it would be rougher there. However,on our way back from the woods, the wind lessend, and the rain stopped, so we thought we would go to the sea as well
and as we drove along, the sun came out (with a black cloud lurking in the distance !) So Zola had two expeditions ! Then ,on the way home, there were several flooded fields, and also a large flood on the road, which we got through safely - but we were quite glad to get back !! Zola enjoyed it, anyway.
It has been cold, and the lights have flickered a couple of times, so I really hope there won't be a power cut.

Yes all ok here. We didn't have much rain at all & only a bit gusty.
Glad Jackys seems ok. We need to get an indoor enclosure for Dickie to go in once she wakes up. She never eats indoors & that’s the time that bothers me most. She just spends her time going round the edges of the enclosure looking for a way out. She’s not happy until she’s outside so I hope we get some early spring sunshine.
Your having some sad news lately re relatives & friends. Hope you are ok too

Good evening everyone!

I'm okay Sue and I sent a card to my cousin's wife today. I hope everyone's okay. The weather was better today but we have a flood alert and I imagine that this is for Canvey Island because where I live is too high up anyway. Anyway I've had four new pupils start this term and today I found that my colleague is leaving so the principal of Allegro Music Academy asked whether I would like to have his pupils which is good but it means me giving up Saturday afternoon permanently and I didn't think I could do that because that's when I catch up with myself, do housework or sed friends. Therefore I said no but I did suggest my free slots during the week.

I've been watching the news about the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz but I have been thinking of dad's two uncles that he lost on the Burmese Railway. One passed away whilst working on the railway and another passed away a year after liberation. There were camps all over East Malaysia that were very remote making liberation difficult.

Anyway I bet Zola was pleased with his excursions!

Goodnight everyone
