What Emysemys said, tho, is what I'm wondering. Like the sea turtles who can copulate successfully, then not mate again for years, but hold and lay fertile eggs, can the Redfoots? Anyone had a redfoot female exposed to males, and then kept apart and several years later laid a fertile clutch?

In July '08 I put up a barrier between my 'Northerns' and 'Brazilians'.

This year there have been hatchlings from this Brazilian.. which showed distinct signs of 'Northern' fertilization - within the same clutch of eggs even. I'll get a pic of the 'last' hatchling from her ASAP.

There are 5 eggs from 7/29 that are doing "something".. but haven't pipped yet. My experience is - "You don't know until you see the PIP!".

I should see "pure" Brazilians in the eggs incubating now.. sooner or later!?!

This is something that I find fascinating. It will be very interesting to see exactly how long the sperm retention lasts in these tortoises.

I omitted that part. The copulation, gestation, and brooding of the clutch is similar to the Birds. After all, Birds are reptiles.

(What happened to our pirate?)
