Hi guys,

Trying to educate myself more regarding anomalies and I know that anomalies occur more in captive bred Hermanns than hatchlings in the wild but I am trying to understand why Hermanns are more prone to have anomalies than other species?
Is this because in their natural habitat they experience 4 seasons rather than most torts how only experience 2?

I do understand that anomalies are pure cosmetic and the main reason for having them are incubation temps being too high but apparently as said, Hermanns and elongated are more prone to have anomalies when CB than other species.

Any of you specialist know why?

Thx!

It is probably due to the incubation temperatures being used in captivity vs. what actually is the case in the wild.

Yes I understand but why are Hermanns more common to have anomalies than other species.
At least that’s what I have been told

I don't know that they are. You see quite a few in other species too.

They certainly are not more prone by any means and I have seen the same frequency and type of anomaly in various different species. Seasons wouldn’t matter either since there are other species that are subjected to the same four. Also, there are several forms of Hermann’s that do that experience much of a change in season (Mallorca, Sardinia, parts of Sicily and the Peloponnesus for example). I’ve personally seen the most anomalies in leopard tortoises and the number far exceeds what I’ve seen in Hermann’s. Still, this does not make leopard tortoises the “Kings of anomalies” at all, it’s only what I’ve observed.
