is pine tree wood shaves is recommended?

Definitely NOT!! Tortoises are susceptible to the bad effects of the oils in pine shavings. My sister had a baby sulcata that is now blind because of it. The aromatic oils in pine burned the corneas. It was an awful thing for the poor little tortoise to go through. (My sister too)

My advice to you is to listen to the people here who HAVE star tortoises. Each specie of tortoise has its own set of requirements. I don't know a thing about how to keep a Star, but Terry Kilgore (redfoot Nerd) does, and I believe on a different thread he showed you pictures of his Star habitat. Seems to me I remember that his habitat has aspen bedding with a bit of grass hay in one corner. You will get many different ideas on how to keep your tortoises, but listen to those who have been keeping Star tortoises successfully.

Wood in general isn't bad, it's only some types. Pine and Cedar are toxic, but other woods such as Aspen, Cypress, and Fir are just fine.

My stars tried to eat the reptile carpet which is a little like carpet grass, I was told to switch to hard carpet felt like which is flat. I however switched to timothy hay which is tons better, just like their natural environment. I can see with the hay they burry themselves in it and seem much more lively.

Yvonne was/is absolutely correct!!!

DO NOT LISTEN TO ANYTHING THAT ANYONE SAYS THAT DOES NOT HAVE PERSONAL EXPERIENCE.. AND IS WILLING AND ABLE TO SHOW SOME TYPE OF EVIDENCE TO BACK THEIR CLAIMS!

Especially these that write these "all knowing" books.

COME ON GUYS.. THIS IS THE WELL-BEING OF OUR TORTOISES WE'RE TALKING ABOUT HERE!

I hope this get's thru to some.

Not even a bit mad.. just trying to make a point..

There IS a small area that has 'fine-cut' cypress where a water-dish is .. otherwise HAY as substrate.

ALL torts have an odor and eat their own POOP.. get over it --- or get a goldfish!

If it's natural grass and free from pesticides it should be fine, mine graze on that to and are fine

I went with my breeder's advice and started mine out on paper towels. Now they are on partial with cypress and a hay corner. I also have a humid hide available to them along with a plain hide.

When they grow a bit larger (and thus a larger environment), I intend to have a section with a more humid based substrate like the soil covered or coir/sand. Right now, just not enough room for all the micro areas I would like them to have the option to get into.

Top soil with sand (50/50) on 1/3 of the terrarium and HAY in 2/3, as for me, for my two sub-adult Stars!
