Hey,

Both torts successfully worm free.
My question is how long to let them recover before winding down for hibernation?

Younger is still chomping away but older is properly off her food as she knows it's wind down time, feel bad trying to get her to eat everyday 🥺

Did they have worms you treated them for recently?
If so I personally would not hibernate them this year.
@Tom
@Yvonne G
Yes they did. Oh ok they didn't get to sleep last year either as I had only had them 6 months or so. Was really hoping they would enjoy a sleep this year. Thanks though

Wait and see what the other two say. I just know that any recent illness and it wouldnt be wise. Usually they don't eat a lot during worming either so if they haven't eaten as normal during their treatment they may not have the weight they would need to safely get thru it.

They had been munching fine although probably helped by the fact they were eating crispy bagged salad to be extra watery and flush the worms through a bit better. Appetite tailed off this week as the weather has gotten colder...

OK, will do see what the other 2 think as well. Thanks 😊

Its really a judgement call. If their weight, appetite, and behavior has all seemed normal and good, then I would go ahead and begin the prep for brumation. Many people fear brumation and don't seem to understand it. I do not fear it, and I go ahead with it for temperate animals unless there is a good reason not to. This is one of those subjects where if you ask 10 people you'll get 12 different answers.

OK thanks. I will check weight againt Jackson scale thing. I just read that after worming their immune system can be a bit low that was my main concern really.
I think the smaller of the 2 really wants a rest, I was having to try to get her to eat now with warm bathes to get the worms all past through and she was MISERABLE last year being over wintered! She came to me super ill (14yo 10cm and 100g - hollow) and would never have made it but she has come on leaps and bounds so really want to get her to sleep if you think the immune system thing is just an 'over worry'? They will see a specialist vet as well

The Jackson scale thing is rubbish. I would give that no weight in my decision. It only works for one species and on in certain situations.

Vets usually know very little about tortoise care. Be careful. Many of the do more harm than good. If you have a good one that really does know tortoises, consider yourself lucky.

I finally finished this last night. It should help:

OK so as long as they feel a healthy weight for size and shell and they are going off food I take it you would go with what they are telling me, start the wind down.
I am very fortunate with my vet she has always had Tortoise and she said ignore all the scales/worry if they are looking bright eyed and a healthy weight it's fine and it's better for them if they are already naturally winding down to go with that.

Not that it's really relevant but I green up a farmers daughter, I can tell a slightly sick animal if I see them, I'm starting to thibk I read top much about the worries of hibernation over going with gut feeling. My gut says wind down and do a slightly short Brumation, wake smaller one up at end of Jan. Thankyou for your help, I think you've just made me realise I need to go with my knowledge of my little ones rather than a general feelijg
