This is my first post on this forum. I'm excited to learn from so many tortoise enthusiasts. My wife and kids bought me my Sulcata tortoise hatchling for my birthday last September. I had done a lot of research and had narrowed my wish list to the Sulcata or Leopard.

The name of my hatchling is Lazzy (short for Lazarus). The short version of how my tortoise got his name is:

The day after getting Lazzy, I received a frantic call from my wife and kids telling my that the tortoise wasn't moving. They called later to say they were sure it was dead. I was devastated. I told them I would take care of it when I got home. Several hours later my family called with exciting news that our little tortoise wasn't dead after all and was now crawling around. My wife still swears that the thing was dead :)

And so was born 'Lazzy'. Attached is a recent photo of Lazzy soaking.

Welcome to the forum, I hope you enjoy your visits here. I imagine he was basking at the time of his reported death.

haha great story but if he did die then you got yourself one hell of a story :D Years ago my friends mom threw away his tortoise because she thought it was dead and my buddy ran to the trash when she told him and found him crawling around lol

When one of my hatchlings basks it scares the heck out of me! He crawls out and lays under the light all stretched out. Poor thing looks like a deflated balloon!

Hello and welcome. Are you finding all the info you need? The first few months are critical for success later on.

Thank you! I live in Southern Nevada, so it gets pretty hot around here :)

I brought Lazzy in for the few months of "winter" where the night time lows can drop to high 30s or low 40s. Other than that he lives outside full time.

I'm learning a lot on this site/forum. But I know there's a lot to learn :)

Congrats!!! Like Tom said, first months are the most crucial to a happy, healthy tortoise.
