So I just discovered that the guy who I bought my hermann tortoises from has a new totally awesome website. http://www.hermannihaven.com/

If you like Hermanns tortoises you will absolutely love it. Seems to be the most in depth information out there plus some mind blowing photos. I definitely had to share!

:D You do know he's a member in here, too. Without looking, I believe he wrote our information on them.

Would that be HermanniChris? I thought his web site was something like gardenstate or some such.

This is Chris, right? I've talked to him on the phone before. Great guy. Very knowledgeable, helpful and courteous.

The site is fantastic. I was planning on acquiring a bunch of Easterns next summer, but that video is making me want Westerns now...

Oh no doubt Chris is a class act guy and the website reflects that. No wonder he has been asked to do articles for Reptile magazine. Obviously homeboy knows he's stuff!

Yes. Hermannihaven is a new website from Chris. He and I are actually working on developing a studbook for Western Herrmann's, as well. Of course, if you've poked around hermannihaven enough, you've already read that!

I don't what to say...thank you all so much for such kind words. It means more than you'll ever know. I work harder than imaginable here and to see my efforts being well received is just...well it makes it all worth it.

Thank you thank you.

I work on the site every single night so one day it'll be finished.
I started the care and maintenance section last night so feel free to have a look but I only got so far....

Thanks Byron for starting this!!
And Thanks Tom for making me aware of this thread!

Yep! I started following Chris on Instagram about the same time I joined the forum. He's very dedicated to his torts and very generous with his time answering my Hermanni related questions. His videos have really helped me, as a tort keeping novice.

What's mind blowing is to think of how much knowledge Chris has acquired at his young age, lord knows what it will be like when he has 30 40 50 plus years of experience and knowledge! Lol at that point they might have more available knowledge on Hermanni than Red Eared sliders lol

Great website.
Chris, are they really that rare over there? Sure, they are less common than THB over here, which cost $150 max, but only around $230 for a hatchling THH-and over in Germany they are so heavily bred you can get them for under $70. They even come into the rescues now and again! Pure ones, not crosses.
Are you allowed to import them then into the US? All the EU countries only allow CB hermanni, graecas, radiata, etc.-no imports. You have to have an A10 cert to prove they are CB. Just interested.

Yes over here they are rare for sure but exactly who here has pure animals is unknown. I know of only a handful of people with pure animals, a few are members on here. The thing with the animals I have here is the actual authentic history, identification and other legit specifics. I'm also close with several over seas parties involving Thh (people in Germany, Italy, France, Spain and the UK) and I am aware of the sometimes more frequently encountered animals over there. They have all told me on several occasions that the low prices are sometimes reflected by the lack of specific locality info which is important to many keepers. Those prices are also unheard of here but hey, to each his own and what is fair to some is unfair to others. What I charge for them has been the same (although varies between localities) for years and had only increased slightly. As for the importation if them, the short answer is no and the long answer is yes. If you're willing to go through the extreme situations, paperwork and financial trouble that I did to acquire them legally, then yes, possibly. It took a VERY long time for everything to come together with the EU, the Italian and Spanish ministries and of course Unites States Fish and Wildlife. Nothing was taken lightly but it was all worth it in the end. Hope that makes sense to you.
Thanks for the good review of the site.

I also meant to add that not all of the animals in the program are "new" some have been here for a long time now.

Thanks for that explanation.
You are right about the locality, generally keepers in Europe do not breed by specific locality for the most part, generally breeding species or subspecies if there are any together. Very few specific locality groups pop up-maybe 5% max of total breeding groups of any species
