I was checking over my tortoise when I noticed what looks to me like a dent/hole in my tortoise shell. I'm extremely worried now and can't believe I've noticed this just now so I'm unsure how long it has been there for.

It doesn't seem wet/moisture (I sprayed her shell with some water for the pictures) and doesn't have a smell coming from it. It is happening on both sides of her shell in near the exact same spot, with one side seeming worse. The biggest hole/dent is big enough to get the tip of your finger in.

I've circled the area of concern in my uploaded pictures. Any help will be greatly appreciated, unfortunately my reptile vet is closed for the weekend so I won't be able to look at booking an appointment until Monday.

It looks like some kind of infectious process going on between the scutes. It doesn't appear to full blown shell rot, but it might be in the same category. I would try putting athlete's foot ointment on the areas for a week or ten days. If that doesn't cure it, it may be bacterial in nature. In that case, next try a triple antibiotic ointment such as Neosporin or a generic version of same.

Good luck!
