Hi, I’m looking to adopt a hermann’s tortoise (prefer adopting from someone that needs to rehome their tortoise rather than buying from a breeder). I live in MD and willing to wait. For transparency, this is my first time with tortoises but I did have a red-eared slider (he sadly passed away at the age of 20). I’ve been doing a lot of research but it’s a bit difficult since there’s a lot of mixed opinions. Let me know if you know of a tortoise that needs a new home or a rescue that I can follow!

Hello! Aw it’s so wonderful you want to adopt!! There’s SO many that need better homes! I’d actually suggest getting yourself on something like Craigslist, so many come up! Just do be aware some haven’t had the best start in life, therefore need some extra tlc❤️
As far as care information, I know firsthand how truly overwhelming the beginning stages of research can feel! Believe me when I say you’ll be saving yourself a whole lot of confusion by using this place as your only source of information, once more knowledgeable it’s easier to distinguish the good from the bad so you can look elsewhere, but if just starting out, I definitely suggest staying here, you can feel free to challenge members on their answers to get to the nitty gritty of any information you need. This place is made up of folks from around the world, many of whom have spent years perfecting their care for the healthiest, smoothest tortoises long term. Facebook pages, stores, breeders and most vets are d are following very outdated information, stick around here and you’ll see why so many love it!!

If wanting to adopt an adult, perhaps you’ll find this thread useful

Some further inspiration for an adult set up

If you ended up deciding on a baby, hopefully this thread I made might be useful to look over! It covers equipment, levels, importance of a closed chamber for younger tortoises(only way to maintain the humidity you need), appropriately maintaining the humidity, substrates, there’s lots of visual examples for everything and a really handy diet link to check out! If going with a greenhouse, the lower the ceiling height, whilst still allowing for recommended bulb height, the better!

This includes some more closed chamber options for a baby, some more efficient than others

Lastly, probably the most important, this one is also really good to familiarise yourself with, it’ll help you avoid the wrong bulbs, substrates, housing etc, I always encourage double checking purchases on the forum too before buying

Hope they help! Take all the time you need going over things, there’s lots of great threads on here! Welcome to the forum, lovely to have you here🐢💚
